I am Executive Director of an Agency in Aroostook County that I started in 2005 called Northern New England Community Resource. (NNCR) NNCR is a certified batterer’s education program that works collaboratively with various referring agencies to meet the batterer education needs of Aroostook County. These relationships include Department of Corrections, Probation/Parole, District Attorney’s Office and Assistant District Attorney’s Office, Department of Health and Human Services, the Hope and Justice Project and private agencies. NNCR now has a batterers group in Houlton, Caribou and Presque Isle. MNCR now serves Washington County. One long-term goal of NNCR is to help reduce the incidents of domestic violence in intimate/partner relationships throughout Aroostook County. We realize that we are only one piece of the community effort to end domestic violence. However, we believe that educating the offenders on the effects of their violence on their partners, children and society will reduce the number of offenders of these crimes. Our primary goal is to promote the safety of victims and their children from the crimes of domestic violence in an effort to support survivors. Within an educational framework, we hold batterers accountable both in the groups and in conjunction with the Criminal Justice System. All facilitators currently working for the NNCR program have completed a mandatory training of a nationally recognized curriculum for batterer’s education. Currently, all of NNCR facilitators have many years experience working with violent men. It is our belief that through batterer education we can bring batterers to a point of accountability, ownership and empathy. Lastly, we provide information and skill training which can provide a practical basis for the men to make behavioral choices.I look forward to making some creative expansions to this agency. I look forward to developing some new relationships.
