Charles Forrest has thirty-five years of experience in academic and research libraries. After nearly a decade with the University of Illinois libraries, first in Chicago, and then downstate at the flagship campus in Urbana-Champaign, in 1988 he moved to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he held a series of administrative positions in the Library, including director of instructional support services, director of planning and budget, and director of library facilities. Charles retired from the Emory Libraries in May 2016.Charles served as library project manager for many library construction and renovation projects at Emory, including the Center for Library and Information Resources, a major addition to Emory’s main library completed in 1998. A member of the Committee on the Environment of Emory's University Senate for many years, Charles served as library project manager for the renovation of Emory’s original main library, the Candler Library, completed in 2003, one of the first LEED-certified renovation projects on campus.Charles has served three times as a library juror for the American Institute of Architects/American Library Association Library Buildings Awards. He has also served as a library juror for the American Library Association/International Interior Design Association biennial Library Building Awards, and as a juror for Library Journal’s “New Landmark Libraries (Academic)” series. Charles is active in IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, Section for Library Buildings and Equipment), ALA (American Library Association, with a focus on ACRL and LLAMA), as well as state and professional organizations such as GLA (Georgia Library Association), SCUP and EDUCAUSE. A published author, Charles is a regular presenter at conferences, workshops and institutes, and has served as library consultant to Union College, the University of North Texas, and Virginia State University among others.Charles closed his consultancy, 21st Century Libraries Consulting, LLC, in December 2023, and is now fully retired.
