JTV is America’s leading retailer of colored gemstones, moving more than $100 million in gemstone alone each year.My role is to act as the in-house gemstone and mineral expert and to ensure appropriate due diligence and standards of excellence are maintained. I work across departments that include broadcast, purchasing, sales, quality control, laboratory and JTV’s legal and compliance teams, and I’ve even been dragged on-screen more than once as part of a regular show called “Rockafellas” and onto the Gemstones.com YouTube channel. It’s a varied role that has allowed me to be part of some fantastic projects including being the reviewing editor for the incredible Sisk Gemology Reference Books and managing gemological teaching and training for the business. JTV remains the only Gem-A Accredited Teaching Centre in the USA and I’m proud to deliver education and curate content for our customers.

Remarkable Rocks is a gemstone consultancy company that grew from a small supplier of Australian sapphire in early 2012, to a registered global business. Sin the early days, I sourced rough material and worked with cutting factories in Sri Lanka and Thailand as well as boutique Australian faceters. Services grew to include supply chain audits, governance and compliance, sourcing specials and faceting gemstones myself. Remarkable Rocks Ltd is an all-round facilitator between parties seeking and delivering services in the international gem world. My proudest achievements during this time have been establishing a traceable route to market for a London based company looking to shine a spotlight on emeralds from Pakistan's SWAT Valley. I am also very proud of initiating the first proof case project using sub-surface laser technology, inscribed within coloured gemstones as a commercially viable option for the authentication of products in the gemstone supply chain.

A role that ran the gamut of operations management within Gem-A. A significant part of my role was to engage with the industry and act as an ambassador for the company at international conferences and trade shows. I maintained external relationships and partnerships pertinent to Gem-A and to Gem-A’s peer-reviewed Journal of Gemmology. I delivered workshops and lectures worldwide and I was fortunate to head up field trips for our members and associates to Sri Lanka and Idar Oberstein. One of my biggest achievements was in positioning the Gem-A education Laboratory as a centre of excellence, which, in partnership with Birmingham City University, helped to establish the world's first gemmological degree. A degree that just a few years later, I would myself obtain.

Nominated by the Gem-A board as Acting CEO after the suspension of the incumbent CEO. Objectives met included: maintaining student and membership numbers, retaining external relationships, looking after staff interests, managing brand reputation and playing a key role in the planning of the 2015 Gem-A conference, Gem-A's flagship event.

I was head-hunted by the CEO of Gem-A at the time because of my passion for gemstones and my experience with technology. My unique skill set not only helped to support the business with multiple transitions in IT, including CRM and LMS procurement and delivery. But it also allowed me to build a world-class laboratory at Gem-A with the acquisition of Raman, FTiR and ED-XRF and updated UV-Vis, De Beers and Sarine equipment. This was not a commercial lab, but instead it was to be used for education. I was responsible for lab training and the security and integrity of the Gem-A lab sample collection.

Hong Kong

The Hong Kong business was an important strategic step for Gem-A. Hong Kong was home to Gem-A's Asia headquarters and hosted more teaching centres than the whole of the UK. China was the manufacturing hub for most equipment sold by Gem Instruments, Gem-A's commercial arm, and the largest supplier of gemmological equipment in Europe. The Hong Kong Division facilitated critical supplier liaison with Chinese manufacturers.Up until 2020, circa 70% of Gem-A revenue came from teaching centres in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan, primarily integrated with universities and offering UK-accredited qualifications with courses in Traditional and Simplified Chinese.

Bauer is the largest privately owned consumer magazine publisher in Europe. UK IT dept approx. 100 people over 8 geographically distinct sites. 1500 Mac users on 4 sites. I held two roles during my time at Bauer: Editorial Support Manager and Publications Support Engineer. I managed service and support for the Mac estates. Provided technical, editorial and project team management. I was also responsible for all hardware /software evaluation and acquisition and the associated contract, services and supplier management.

This seemed like a good idea at the time and although it was hard work, I enjoyed my time as a diamond driller. I learned a lot about early exploration and assessment of sites as well as my part in generating the data needed for mine planning and accurate resource reporting. FIFO and Kalgoorlie-based roles. R/C, RAB, Air Core, but primarily diamond drilling on properties in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Leonora and Laverton districts.
