Broadcast ProducerBiovisionafricatrust Oct 2017 - PresentKenyaBiovision Africa Trust (BvAT) is a not-for-profit organization established in Kenya in 2009 by the Biovision Foundation for ecological development in Switzerland and supported by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Nairobi. The Trust’s goal is to alleviate poverty and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Kenya and other African countries through supporting dissemination of information and knowledge on appropriate technology to improve human, animal, plant, and environmental health. Agricultural output and food supply are however hindered by various environmental factors and lack of information and relevant training for the African smallholder farmers. Plant pests, for instance, are responsible for up to 80% of crop losses. Ecologically sustainable solutions are a practical alternative for African farmers to achieve good crop yields without relying on expensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides. What is lacking, however, are effective dissemination pathways to deliver relevant information to the farmers. My work at Biovision entails producing audiovisual content for the African small scale farmer.

Radio Producer/Communication OfficerKochfm Feb 2008 - Dec 2015KorogochoKoch FM is a community radio station that was launched in 2006 by the youth of Korogocho slum. Korogocho is the fourth largest informal settlement in Kenya’s capital Nairobi. The slum is estimated to cover 1.5 square kilometers, with an estimated dense population of between 150,000 to 200,000 people from varied ethnic groups. The conception of Koch FM was somewhat accidental, the young men and women originally planned to make a series of short documentaries depicting the life of people in Korogocho capturing their daily realities and struggles in order to tell the Korogocho stories from a positive and fair perspective countering the discriminations that the people living Korogocho had been facing for many years because of the area reputation portrayed in the mainstream media. The radio’s mission is to provide a platform for the community to address their issues through information sharing, education and communication with an aim to promote social, political and economic well-being of the Korogocho community and the general listenership. This is done through radio programs and also through acting as a community conversation forum.

The organisation is registered as a community-based organization (CBO), and at present works in three ghetto communities (two informal settlements –Korogocho and Mathare– and in the populous Dandora estate) in the East of Nairobi. Its main work is geared towards informing ghetto residents (on civic education for instance), bring out the voice of ghetto communities and organise social action through the use of (alternative) media. Since its inception, GFT has produced numerous films on peace building, conflict resolution and reconciliation. One of its films mbulu won an award in 2008 at the Zanzibar international film festival. What’s more, GFT organises regular screenings of its films for free at community halls and in other meeting places within these ghetto communities. These film screenings provide important avenues to open up debate about current conflicts and stimulate peace building, democracy and civic participation in the moment and from below. At the same time, the organization also takes on and develops local talent in film production, an emerging industry in the country. Towards this end, the organisation has trained top talent that now works in the higher echelons of the growing film industry. -
