Locally I have served as elder, overseer and treasurer; regionally as clerk and treasurer; and nationally on Meeting for Sufferings and in a number of rôles for Quaker Peace and Social Witness.

When I took over in 1974 I had one partner. Over the following years we expanded eventually to six. We became a teaching practice, replaced our record system twice, first with A4 paper records and then in 1990 with a computerised system. I co-ordinated the planning and construction of new premises.I gave up my partnership in Church Stretton when I moved to the NHS IA in 2000. while at the IA I continued to do the occasional session in clinical practice. When I left the NHS IA I returned full time to general practice, mainly in Shrewsbury.

I was a member of South Shropshire District Council from 2005 until it was dissolved to be merged into the Shropshire Unitary Council.

The NHS Information Authority brought together all the uses of Information and IT in the NHS. At its core were two important premises; one, that you cannot separate the uses of information that are essential to an organisation and the information systems which are used to handle store, manipulate, analyse and retrieve that information. and secondly that you don't do anything without involving the users. Initially appointed to head up medical relations, I was responsible for ensuring that doctors of all types were involved in all the projects, programmes and processes of the NHS Information Authority.I then took over responsibility for the whole directorate, thereby becoming responsible for the engagement of stake-holders of every type in our processes.When the National Programme for It was set up by Tony Blair in 2004, it became clear that the philosophy of the two organisations was incompatible and I left. The NHS IA was abolished the following year.
