The Charter of the VMware Network Virtualization & Security Business Unit (NSBU) Systems Engineering Organization is to be the dedicated overlay Pre-Sales experts driving the sales and adoption of VMware’s next generation network virtualization and security platform, VMware NSX. The team works directly with NSBU Product Management & Engineering, the VMware SDDC Field Sales teams, and directly with customers to increase the footprint of VMware NSX in cloud computing environments.

Responsibilities include presales engineering for the enterprise market sector. Role is split betweensupporting UPMC sales and designs and supporting sales teams and Business Partners in NorthAmerica. Create and present solutions based on the Alcatel-Lucent portfolio. Although a technical role, the skills of influencing and creating opportunities through selling skills are utilized. Technical skills built upon previous roles within Alcatel-Lucent as well as previous work related experience include: Ethernet (L2 & L3), emerging datacenter technologies (SPB, SDN), MPLS, DWDM, and 802.11 WLAN. The ability to be solution conversant while understanding and identifying product strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and competition are a primary responsibility. Other responsibilities include bids, RFI's, RFP's and network design diagrams. Additionally setting up, configuring, and designing proof of concepts (POC) for very technical customer opportunities are part of the role. Position is customer satisfaction oriented with daily customer and business partner sales support required.

Responsibilities include operation and maintenance of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers (UPMC) Alcatel-Lucent network routing and switching infrastructure including ~800 Ethernet switches, ~50 MPLS Service Routers, and ~15 DWDM Optical backbone devices. Duties include tier2 escalation and troubleshooting for all network related issues. Other tasks include staging, implementation, and cut-over of previously mentioned devices in critical healthcare environments. Internal duties include drafting methods of procedure (MOP) documents detailing requests for change (RFC) procedures in accordance with UPMC and ITIL standards. Part of an on-call monthly rotation for 24x7 coverage of UPMC network related issues. Work in a team environment to collaborate and share ideas for improvement.

Responsibilities include pre-sales, implementation, and post sales support for security, network routing and switching, application delivery, and convergence designs for clients regionally. Additionally provide managed services for said designs. Specific duties include pre-sales design, project management and implementation, post-sales support, on-site customer consulting, bill of material creation, design validation & testing, manufacturer liaison, and evaluation support. Also senior escalation engineer for all managed service customers and major project implementations. Specific implementation duties include configuration of; firewall policies, remote access solutions including SSL VPN and IPSEC, traffic shaping, traffic compression, traffic acceleration, load balancing, QOS, VoIP, WAN routing, LAN switching and routing, IPS/IDS, content filtering, anti-SPAM, and IM and P2P controls. Internal responsibilities include managing department of three engineers keeping their utilization at or above 85%. Responsible for 1.3 million dollar managed services target and overall company growth. Additional internal duties include strategic planning with senior management to participate in market intelligence collection, business growth planning, and execution of strategic plan. Provide leadership within the department, interaction w/growth team (weekly sales meetings), weekly technology presentations to company, and internal IT support. Provide on-site support, project management, and technical assistance for high profile customers. Design advanced routed and switched networks primarily using Alcatel equipment. Design and architect firewalls, intrusion prevention, bandwidth management, and other security measures on networks large and small. Provide end-to-end sales assistance from initial consultation to support after the sale. Responsibilities include pre-sales technical assistance such as network design, product selection, RFP response, and statement of work composition. In addition, other duties include; designing, programming, installing, and project managing product installations for a wide range of customers worldwide. Other tasks comprise vendor interaction and selection, partner interface and coordination, and technology planning and education. Projects range from large enterprise multi-year roll outs to one day troubleshooting calls. Larger projects call for multifaceted expertise in many different technologies. Smaller assignments incorporate intimate interface with customers to install or troubleshoot small networks or problems.

Responsibilities included designing, programming, installing, and project managing Marconi product installations for a wide range of customers nationwide. Typical projects involved service provider ATM switch installations for metropolitan area or wide area networks new and existing. Responsibilities included being the single point of contact for the customer for the duration of the project, scheduling and coordinating any third party resources necessary to successfully complete the project, and technical expertise and configuration experience to effectively build the network. Other projects included, but are not limited to; digital cable backbone installations using ATM and Ethernet switches, campus network installations involving ATM and Ethernet switches and routers for combining voice, video, and data, and small LAN installs using Ethernet switches incorporating VLAN’s. Specific protocols used in project implementations included ATM, Ethernet, IP, IPX, AppleTalk, RIP, OSPF, and PNNI. Accountable to maintain an understanding of current and future technologies such as MPLS and IPV6, and their impact on network design and configuration.

Designed, installed, serviced, and maintained a diverse collection of voice, data, and video solutions for numerous customers nationwide.
