Assisting with primary data collection from the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve investigating the effect of a changing climate on aguadas (semi-permanent rain-filled water bodies) and the species that widely depend on them. Assisting with a range of animal surveys including bats, birds, herpetofauna, Hymenoptera and mammals as well as habitat surveys to contextualise these. These surveys required techniques such as mist netting, plant and animal identification, mark-release-recapture, mammal tracking, habitat surveys and animal processing to a high level. Experience was also gained in bird handling in support of identification and analytical processing.

Working alongside a third-year PhD student researching the potential for various wheat varieties to be used as trap crops for the control of Bird Cherry Oat Aphids and Grain Aphids, known vectors of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV). This position has allowed me to gain knowledge surrounding relevant topics such as integrated pest management and insect ecology as well as skills in study design, experimental protocol and data analysis. The position also allows me to pursue my interest aside from the project, specifically measuring life history traits of alate (winged) aphids and their progeny. I also had the opportunity to present mat the Royal Biological Society's Plant Health Symposium findings and produce an educational/journal-style poster describing my project and its results.
