Defense Technologies, Inc. engages in the research, development, production, testing, evaluation, and support of integrated manned and unmanned warfare systems for land, sea, air, and space operations.Tasks focused on the aerospace and mechanical engineering disciplines associated with research and development. Product designs were taken from conceptual sketches to prototypes, and then avenues to turn the prototypes into manufactured products were sought.- Developed a new composite wing for the Kestrel-T Unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAV) that increased gross takeoff weight by 25% and payload capacity by 50%. Also reduced the labor-hours required for new builds from 40 hrs to 8 hrs- Accumulated over 4,000 hours designing products using model based methods including 2D/3D CAD, FEA, and CFD- Developed user manuals, assembly manuals, testing procedures, and CAD drawings for six products.- Researched topics relevant to emerging Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) technologies including air-deployed UAVs, Intelligent Autonomy, Risk Reduction Strategies, and National Air Space integration- Developed a three-layered concept containing active and passive methodologies to safely integrate manned and unmanned entities into the National Airspace- Integration & Test Team received an experimental Special Airworthiness Certificate to operate the Kestrel-T Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) in the National Airspace (NAS)- Logged over 30 hours as an Air Vehicle Operator of the Kestrel-T UAS. Participated in flight tests and demonstrations at private airports in the NAS, U.S. Army ranges, and NASA facilities. Command and control software included DTI’s OpenUMI, and Cloud Cap Technology’s Piccolo Command Center- Team Lead, Sponsored Outreach Project; Selected and mentored a small team of engineering students through their senior design courses. Team’s Unmanned Ground Vehicle design received the highest honor (Dean’s Level) at the 2008 UNC-C Lee School of Engineering Student Design Expo
