John Doherty opened his first restaurant, Black Barn in the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan, in 2015 after he served as the executive chef of the Waldorf=Astoria hotel in New York City for 23 years, leaving in 2009. He is known to have cooked for more Presidents, Kings, and dignitaries from around the world than any chef in history.He had served at the Waldorf for an entirety of 30 years, and became executive chef of the Waldorf in 1985 at the age of 27, the youngest person ever to be named to the position. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978, where he was voted "most likely to succeed”.He also started Heavenly Harvst Foundation, which makes meals for the less fortunate utilizing a proprietary process that he developed allowing fresh, wholesome foods to be shelf stable for 18 months while being safe and easy to prepare.Doherty has appeared in numerous Travel Channel, A&E and Food Network programs as well as appearances on The Today Show, CBS, CW11 and many regional affiliates. He has been awarded an honorary Doctorate degree from Johnson & Wales, an honorary Masters degree from the Culinary Institute of America and a Leadership award from Niagara University as well as Food Arts Magazines' Silver Spoon Award.
