Tech Support Representative
This role started out in their email/phone help desk queue. I later moved into their hardware RMA service team which was more about shipping and inventory. ACCOMPLISHMENTS* Explained to bedridden customer how to download a modem driver from her neighbor's house and split it onto two floppies so she can email her family.* Escalated case of a shattering CD within cdrom drive to boss.* Took a chance to try to learn from a sysadmin customer but met with rude, condescending sarcasm.* Overheard my co-worker explain with 110% certainty to the customer that to troubleshoot the problem we needed to go through the process of "illumination" (not elimination). In retrospect the correct textbook move should have been to correct my teammate rather than resurface this more than a decade later.
Juice Extraction And Serving Specialist
Around this time I went back to school and needed a part time job. The manager had a booth at a job fair and surely he was impressed by my Cold Fusion and PHP experience! I was told that this was at one of the busiest Jamba Juice's in the country or at least the West Coast. It's located at Fremont's business intersection (Mowry & Fremont). ACCOMPLISHMENTS* lost argument with coworker over the pronunciation of "Isis"* caved into orders from my teenage boss to refrain from discarding moldy oranges at the bottom of the crate* pretended to appear busy by cleaning random stuff during non-peak hours
It Generalist
This was for a suite of early stage experimental websites that the owner wanted to try out. One project was to scrape power status data from the California ISO which provided a XML feed that I scraped, cached and parsed into a local MySQL with PHP. Another was to spider/scrape and cache Craigslist job data.It was a generalist position so I ordered, installed and administered a pair of Red Hat 7.1 machines. Those housed about 7 domains of which a few I handled the custom PHP/MySQL for. Certain domains needed their own mailing list and email setup via qmail.
Web Engineer
Brightstar acquired Letstalk in 2012; in 2013 Target acquired Brightstar. I built out the first version of the Letstalk's shipadmin - a backend site for our fulfillment center in Texas to help track the state of orders. Cell phone had to go through an activation stage. Later on it had to handle returns and splitting orders. We did tarball releases which served as version control at the time. The VP of Engineering at the time shared a file that showed example MySQL queries you could copy/paste in order to level up your understanding quicker. My jacket was in the background of the pic in the original Forbes article: https://www.forbes.com/global/2000/0124/0302045a.html
Web Developer
This was the first job I found through a recruiter. Some memories I have were: The new Director of IT rolled out a new Watchguard firewall which ended up breaking something that a senior developer complained. I was ok with that because I was in a cube next to the Director and he was nice enough to configure me with sudo access so I could play quake on his machine. Aside from PHP, I leveled up my Quake 3 Arena skillz became a top notch camper at the top of platform on q3dm17. This was the first time I got paid to do PHP. We had started a new website called SolutionCity which offered downloadable versions of software (new to IMSI, though from an industry perspective not quite cutting edge in 1999). This is where I cut my teeth in Linux where I learned to setup my own dev environment for PHP/MySQL. It wasn't necessarily reproducible - it was good enough to hack around on. I learned a lot from RTFM'ing (of course) but where that failed I relied upon EfNet's #linuxhelp enough to start helping others also.
Web Developer
Hacked around with Cold Fusion and Server Side Javascript (aka LiveWire) to:- produced commission/payout reports for a records label- maintained a retail swimwear/bikini website- learned the concept of a SQL join- got familiar with ragingbull.com (stock discussion boards) to decide if it's worth selling the penny stocks I was partially paid in- tried hard to avoid listening to my coworker talk extra loud about his DotCom Boom stock investments
