In this role, I have been involved and completed:• Collaboration with Mechanical, Aerodynamics and Composite Engineers to come up with efficient, performant and reliable design solutions. This involves first-principles analysis, hand calculations, FE Analysis, component prove-out and testing.• Full responsibility and development of programmable - MATLAB based - tools capable of extracting, processing and analysing track data to perform detail structural reports from race weekends and testing events, which are directly used by Senior/Principal Engineers and the Head of Structures. • Heavily involved in the structural analysis of front and rear suspension components for the Williams F1 racecar, as well as taking ownership of multiple other projects such as hydraulically/pneumatically actuated assemblies, structural mounts, Aerodynamic testing rakes and validation testing studies.
Graduate Structural Engineer
Unsprung Manager | Brunel Racing Formula Student
Having been actively involved with the Brunel Racing Formula Student throughout my degree, during my third and final years of my MEng course I held the position of Unsprung Manager for the team. I completed my MEng Major Group Project based on the Suspension design, development and optimisation of the BR-XX FSAE Car. As a result of my contribution to the team, the car successfully ran on an all-new suspension system, fully designed, manufactured and built in-house. Prior to the summer competitions, the car completed a number of track tests to validate the design and find the optimal set-up with the drivers, to then successfully participate in the FS-UK and FS-Italy Formula Student Events. The new Unsprung system greatly delivered the handling, performance, adjustability and reliability targets, and vastly outperformed its predecessors at the race events.
Axle Quality Engineer | Suspension Systems Integration
This experience consisted on a paid summer placement completed at Jaguar Land Rover for a length of 12 weeks. My role was as an Axle Quality Engineer, reporting directly to the Technical Group Leader. My main responsibilities and tasks were:• Monitoring and analysing axle quality data from various car lines in order to make sure that the carsdeliver the expected suspension performance and quality targets.• Coordinating, guiding and influencing Suspension Systems Integration (SSI) delivery teams within Chassis such as tuning, systems architecture, design or dynamics towards meeting Programme objectives.• Pioneering new investigation methods to inspect potential root causes of suspension geometry poor capability.• Contributed to the optimisation and improvement of internal established methods and tools for my team. My role during this internship was highly dynamic, involving working collaboratively across departments and sites, liaising with colleagues in other areas of the business and being highly communicative and proactive to be able to achieve the project objectives and understand the root causes that result in poor suspension manufacture/assembly capability. Learned Six Sigma and got familiarised with managing, processing and displaying data using Minitab. Implemented the principles of Six Sigma through the projects I worked on, identifying areas for improvement and solutions. During my experience I supported more experienced members of my team on a number of occasions, providing very valuable input to my team through my knowledge and experience in car systems and their operation.
Junior Design Engineer
During my placement year at Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) I was involved in a number of projects, within a variety of sectors, but the main project I got most deeply involved in was the design and development of reimagined and restored Porsche 911. This project was as result of the technical parternship to develop a selection of restoration and modification services strongly oriented toward lightweighting and dynamic improvements to the vehicle. As part of this project, I had multiple design and management duties and responsibilities, including:• Concept, geometry and component design of the front and rear suspension systems• Vehicle integration design- Component/Assembly layout design, such as Steering system, Brake System and ABS systems, HVAC system, battery and electronics. - Vehicle weight tracking- Feasibility studies, such as anti-roll bar schemes, suspension schemes as well as for other systems such as the brake system- Powertrain integration support, with assistance in integrating pneumatic systems and occasionally supporting transmission design• Involvement in daily design reviews during vehicle design and mule car build• Support in testing programmes such as ownership of a chassis torsional test study• Ownership and responsibility over the programme parts bill of material involving fortnightly meetings with the Project Manager, Chief Designer and Procurement team to monitor the release schedule, enable effective project decisions, manage project cost, progress and identify any potential risks. Skills:• Collaborative, team working skills• Engineering Design and drawings skills (use of NX Siemens and Team Center)• Use of first principles to guide conceptual designs• Strong communication skills• Project Management• Problem-solving skills
