HEROES is a unique partnership that allows NSRDEC scientists and UMass Lowell faculty and students to work side-by-side either on campus or at NSRDEC in Natick, MA. HEROES has in excess of twenty active projects that span three portfolio areas: Individual Multi-Threat Protection; Human Systems Integration; and Force Protection and Sustainment. The Technical Program Manager is responsible for coordinating: quarterly and final reports; financial reporting; project summary status; new proposal efforts; webpage updates; and much more.Generated an overview of fiber, textile and textile related capabilities for UMass Lowell.Managed and coordinated a Department of Defense opportunity, the Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles Manufacturing Innovation Institute, for UMass Lowell that was partnered with Georgia Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University, the University of Oregon, the University of Maryland, and SCRA. Managed projects for materials used on the Shuttle space suit.Determined that the root cause of leakage in a prototype astronaut glove design was because of abrasion that mandated a design change.Established that the most likely cause of cuts in astronauts’ gloves during a spacewalk was because of contact with sharp edges on electrical connectors. This resulted in an evaluation protocol for all space hardware to eliminate sharp edge hazards.
