Let me introduce myself . . . I volunteer in my community. What a wonderful way to get to know people and help out where needed. At the moment that involves serving as a volunteer with Douglas County Master Gardener Association, a board member for Umpqua Valley Habitat for Humanity, a member of United Women of Faith, and a chef with Lasagna Love. The last one is an international program where we cook up lasagnas for people who request them, and it’s all done with love. Late in 2018, I began baking gluten-free pizza crusts as one of the partners for a small company called Inspiration Mixes. I also blended flour mixes and baked all kinds of gluten-free deliciousness. What a sense of satisfaction in providing food to people who can’t eat -- or shouldn’t eat – gluten. Just before I started baking, I retired from the U.S. Forest Service after 22 years on the Umpqua National Forest as the public affairs officer. Talk about a great job -- dedicated employees, involved public and an incredible forest. Besides public and legislative affairs duties, I handled the Forest's Civil Rights program, partnerships, Title II of the Secure Rural Schools Act, and administrative duties along with a temporary assignment as a district ranger. I started in the U.S. Forest Service in 1988 as a public affairs specialist and timber sale planner on the Mapleton Ranger District, Siuslaw National Forest. What a wonderful introduction to land management practiced on the ground. Then I worked on the team developing the management plan for the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Next, I coordinated interpretation and public affairs for the Oregon Dunes.Past jobs included being the Education Coordinator at the World Forestry Center and a tour guide for Holland America/Westours.Specialties: Group facilitation, issue management, writing, communication plans, event management, volunteer programs, and partnership development. Also baking, cooking, gardening, and rolling up my sleeves to just get it done.
