Girls Who Code is a national movement to close the gender gap in technology by teaching girls coding skills. As a volunteer, I implemented the refugee center's first program in collaboration with staff. I taught programming basics to teen girls in weekly sessions, adapted curriculum to meet their needs (they were new English speakers, sometimes new to computers as well), created additional materials and deployed training strategies to keep them engaged. As the lead instructor, I organized and supervised a team of other volunteers.

I was hired to support the office's transition to a new COM system. In my role, I created and managed working groups to identify and troubleshoot go-live and post go-live issues; trained account managers on solutions, documented those solutions and created knowledge banks to support employees. I decided I wanted to try teaching something other than software ... so I taught English for a while. Specifically, English as a second language (ESL) to adult students in an academic setting. This job was SO hard (to do well) and SO rewarding. I also learned new teaching strategies and development frameworks that I still use to this day. Anyway, as a full-time ESL teacher I developed detailed, objective-focused lesson plans; created resources and materials; devised activities, reinforcements, and assessments; and taught my learners using student-focused, task-based frameworks. I also assessed student progress, kept records, and implemented a new classroom LMS.
