Throughout my PhD, I have organised and delivered several outreach initiatives with the aim of promoting diversity in STEM fields. At the Exploring STEM event in 2022 and 2023 at The University of Sheffield, I ran an exhibition stand and engaged with year-9 female and non-binary students, sharing insights into my current PhD research and encouraging them to consider STEM subjects for post-16 study. I also delivered several workshops for students from disadvantaged schools in Sheffield, highlighting the importance of current scientific research in addressing global challenges to inspire underrepresented groups to choose STEM subjects at degree level. Additionally, I delivered a 1-hour lecture to sixth-form students providing them with a taster of university-level study. As part of the Sutton Trust Summer School programme, I supported first-generation university applicants by running an evolution-focused lab session that also emphasised transferable skills essential for higher education. These experiences have been incredibly rewarding and reaffirm my commitment to making STEM more inclusive.
