Public health epidemiology is the perfect balance of data, disease, and human experience. I like to think that I have a unique insight on each factor because of my background in microbiology and my current position in communicable disease control.My passion for microbiology began in school and moved into non-profit and clinical microbiology laboratories. The COVID-19 pandemic changed my perspective of public health while I was a laboratory technician, and I knew I needed an MPH to make a resounding difference. Eventually I started with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services as a COVID Case Investigator. Speaking with people during such a tumultuous moment of their life required empathy, kindness, patience, and critical thinking to pull key epidemiological information from our conversations. I previously conducted active surveillance for CDC’s RESP-NET in the Enteric and Respiratory Illness Epidemiology Unit of MDHHS and utilized SAS, R, and PowerBi to analyze state trends of RSV-associated hospitalizations. As an intern with Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Disease section of the state, I had hands on experience with vector trapping, identification, and collaboration on an interdisciplinary One Health team.I’m currently a disease investigator with the Southern Nevada Health District, combining my skills in field work with my passion to improve the health of my community. My goal is to create awareness of local communicable diseases and One Health through surveillance, data science, and outreach to high-risk populations.
