The Industrial Assessment Center is an organization funded by the Department of Energy and intended for two purposes: to train a generation of energy engineers and to provide energy savings for local industries. Interns are responsible for contacting, visiting, and assessing local manufacturing facilities. Additionally, interns prepare an extensive, company-exclusive report based on ASHRAE standards. These reports provide a detailed summary of the facility's energy consumption, a description of the plant's history, layout and process including flow charts and diagrams, and a detailed description of the recommendations suggested by the team to reduce overall energy consumption.

Lincoln, Nebraska Area

Funded by the CENUSA federal grant, the goal of the internship was to assist scientists from the Department of Agriculture with their studies of switchgrass as a biofuel alternative. Duties included soil sampling, vegetation sampling, sampling crop gas emissions, measuring the samples in the laboratory, and completing a final project analyzing the relationship between biomass accumulation and such variables as terrain, precipitation, and temperature.
