15 years ago I underwent my second back operation and was told by the surgeon that if my discs prolapsed again I would be on pain medication for the rest of my life. After 20 years as a Specialist Painter in Faux and oil glaze finishes this was quite devastating. I had taken and passed the level 5 Ptlls and Dtlls in the ‘Lifelong’ sector. It was just after this that my discs decided to give up. During recovery I was employed at my son’s school as a voluntary reader for SEND children twice a week. My son was in year 3. They seemed to think I had potential as they offered me a job as a 1-1 with SEN children. I quickly adapted and having discovered the art room, began to in-still, with the help of the SENDco, creative programmes, both 1-1 and group work. I took whatever training I could get that covered most neurodiverse complexities. I spent 7 years at this school, working with many children. The experience I gained was invaluable but tough. I set up art work shops, after school clubs, behaviour support groups. I worked with the Premier League Primary Stars programme, adapting it into a creative sketchbook activity, so much so that I had an article written about it on Premier League Primary Stars and Teachwire. I loved doing my advanced course with David Holston, ‘Think ,inside the sketchbook’. This opened many doors that I had previously kept locked as I was growing up. Such a powerful provision. It was not long after this that I felt I needed to move on. I joined another school and again set about setting up creative programmes for children who were neurodiverse and others with social challenging behaviours.During COVID, I was asked to design and create a Nurture Room. This I did, painting murals on the walls for the children making it a friendly, calm, safe place. I then proceeded to run SEMH programmes from here. It was then that I discovered Drawing and Talking, a level 2 Attachment based provision. It was a LIGHTBULB moment. All my life I had been doing this, even as far back as to the age of 7 years old. I attended the course and knew this was what all my training had been about. I set up programmes for the children and ran with it. I took my advanced nearly two years ago making nearly 4 years experience in this provision.I then left and created another Nurture Provision in another school, this time adding more creative art basedprovisions. It was in July this year that I decided the NOISE in schools was hindering my ability to help those that needed me. I became an Independent Drawing and Talking Practitioner. I have come full circle.

Drawing And Talking Independent PractitionerChris Baylis Aug 2024 - PresentManchester Area, United KingdomAfter 14 years working within the Primary |School sector, i have decided to become a Drawing and Talking Independent Practitioner. This is a level 2 SEMH provision not only for the benefit of children but for everyone. It is a therapeutic technique that helps children and adults express their emotions, thoughts and experiences that they might ordinarily find difficult to articulate verbally. The process involves the individual drawing pictures over 12 sessions, whilst talking to the practitioner. The drawing serves as a medium for communication, allowing the individual to explore their feelings in a non-threatening and creative way. This method is particularly effective with children who may have experienced trauma, anxiety or other emotional challenges. It can help them process complex emotions and events in a way that feels safer and more manageable than a direct conversation. The focus is not on the artistic quality of the drawing but on the expression and meaning behind it. This combination of drawing and talking can help build trust, encourage self-expression and support emotional healing. -
Nurture LeadAll Saints Primary School Sep 2022 - Aug 2024Stockport, England, United KingdomI have recently created and developed the Nurture Provision at All Saints Primary School in Stockport. I transformed what was an old IT room into a sensory/nurture room where the children can go for interventions and therapy sessions. It’s a beautiful, calm, quiet room, with child friendly murals painted by myself on the walls. The provision was not only designed for those children with an EHCP or who are on the SEN register but for all children. Sometimes we forget about the children who come to school day in and day out. Everybody needs help in some form especially after the COVID pandemic. SEMH is now at the forefront of all aspects of school life. The main provision which has been rolled out across the school is the highly successful Draw and Talk program. I have been running this provision for nearly two years and has been extremely successful in helping children with many different types of trauma and SEMH difficulties. It’s always been my adage that there’s always a reason for a child’s behaviour. A child who is not coping won’t be able to access the curriculum to the best of their ability. Draw and Talk provides a non- invasive analytical psychological approach to children’s drawings over a period of 12 sessions, once a week. I would highly recommend that all schools train a member of staff from the foundation to advanced stages in this highly successful provision.Lego therapy and Next Steps run alongside group interventions, catered to children with diverse SEMH difficulties. Art and creative activities are the core basis of therapy, carefully programmed for each group and individual session.Parent and child sessions have proven to be very successful in helping with attachment difficulties. Re creating the bond between parent and child through art and creativity has always been a great leveller. This creates a safe atmosphere for dialogue to begin where before there was silence.Nurture, for all children, is essential in schools today. -

Special Education Needs SpecialistSt Joseph’S R.C.Primary School, Petersgate, Stockport, May 2018 - Dec 2022StockportI am currently Nurture Lead and Art teacher at St Joseph’s, Stockport Primary. I have a vast experience with teaching and looking after SEN and children with behavioural difficulties, employing Talk and Draw interventions along with other renown methods such as Lego and art interventions. I have created our own Nurture room by painting child friendly murals and furnishing it with bean bags and other sensory equipment. It is a beautiful room where the children can feel they can come to and feel safe. I am imaginative and very creative in both my artwork and interventions. I have recently created a library for the children of KS2 by painting murals of famous characters from books. It was incredibly satisfying seeing the children’s and staffs reaction to it. Makes it all worth while 👍🏻
