About Chris Mcclendon

Being an IT Manager at an R1-reasearch class public university makes my days (and sometimes my evenings!) overflow with rewarding, impactful work. At this point in my career I spend stretches of time split between being immersed in deeply technical administration of key services and being an engaged, thoughtful manager of a dedicated crew of seasoned IT specialists. On the operational side of my job duties in the last 5 years I have managed:1.) The core storage environment for the University, protecting the business, learning, and research data that cannot be lost and must be securely delivered without interruption. 2.) The centralized Remote Services platform for the campus, providing thousands and thousands of students and faculty access to the resources they need, whenever they need them. 3.) The cloud-based storage platforms of OneDrive and Box for the institution, specifically helping groups collaborate both within the university but also trans-institutionally in a controlled, secure way. --I am especially proud of being able to support the university using these resources during the pandemic, when the campus was closed, business had to continue, and students needed a way to engage university resources without being able to be physically present. It was quite a journey and something I learned a great deal from, both personally and professionally. On the human capital management side of my job in the last 5 years I have:1.) Accepted the challenge of leading a team through institutional budget cuts, a pandemic, the fallout of the great resignation, and organizational restructuring. 2.) Earned a certification through Educause for new IT managers. 3.) Filled in for various organizational gaps in accessibility management, application support, and infrastructure management. 4.) Enhanced organizational support workflows to reduce time, cost, and frustration for everyone involved. I do find that as I settle in to my 17th year of IT work I find myself pulling from my so many different areas of my life, from being a parent, to a waiter, to a performer, and a janitor even, and my diverse background of experience allows me to relate and problem solve with an efficient, humble relatability.

  • The Pneumatic Diner
    The Sarge
The Pneumatic Diner Oct 1998 - Jun 2003
Dishwasher. Janitor. Cook. Waiter. Assistant Accountant. Scheduler. Manager. Evangelist of the Pneumos.I performed nearly every job that this business had to offer, and I did it with as much integrity, intensity, and insanity as I could at that age. I worked under two owners of the business and saw the restaurant through an amazing arc of its life. I was a living, breathing part of this machine for years. The 'at service' attitude I learned at this job has brought tremendous joy to my subsequent jobs. This place allowed me to forge a rock solid work ethos that is my very own to this day. I earned longtime friends through this time at the Pneumatic.
  • Raleys
Bagger, Pharmacy Tech, Receiver, And Photo Clerk
    Raleys Sep 1992 - Mar 1997
I was hired as a bagger which was great fun. I did well and was promoted. I learned how to check and give correct change by counting it back to the customer. I opened, closed, stocked, cleaned, organized, ordered merchandise for departments, set up displays, helped decorate during holidays and events, and was well liked. 1-hour photo machines were brought into the company in 1994, and I learned how to operate and maintain the kodak-style machine quite well. I was also employed by the Pharmacy for a year. I learned how to read prescription shorthand, got to know my way around the register and some insurance transactions, and considered being a pharmacy tech for a short while. Calm diplomacy was developed quickly at this point in my career. I learned a great deal about management styles, regular life, and how a retailer operates from many different angles. I met some really wonderful people and am glad that I had this job at a young(er) age.
  • Jani-Tech Inc.
    Janitor
    Jani-Tech Inc. Sep 1987 - May 1992
I operated a 3' wide dustmop every other weekday morning on the floors of local Reno drugstores. I learned how to get up on time for work, repair the small engines that powered propane buffers, operate and maintain the buffers themselves, and how to conduct myself professionally.I learned about the value of regular work that was challenging to me personally, and I learned how to choose what matters from what does not matter.
