About Chris Walling
I'm at a crossroads I never expected with environmental engineering. I've helped some people keep their family farms, and I've written the "shut-down documents" for some very dirty old smokestacks. I've always done my best in government agencies, where it felt like there was a driving sense of purpose to the work. But now environmental issues are politically valuable as a source of fear, the first building block of total control. This means the work environment I've always done best in is now one I instinctively avoid as a matter of conscious. I find myself looking either to private industry, where the focus is immediate and direct, or hoping for a very, very unique and pragmatic philanthropic organization that actually values technical truth.I've done a wide variety of things compared to the typical engineer. I look for meaning in a job, especially regarding environmental issues. I have a change agent personality, and I want my employment to make a difference in things that matter. I network across official chains of command within large organizations, creating cooperation without needing authority over people, and gathering information from sources outside my immediate office. I can land in a new subject matter, find the relevant texts and find a few trustworthy teachers, and be functioning quickly. I'm calm in the middle of controversy. I'm drawn to different cultures and have always been very popular with people from international backgrounds.I've done both design and regulation; I've done both air and water. I've been in several critical seasons where powerful new changes went from legislation to the ground. I'm looking for another season like that, at the next higher level.
