"The History Guy" And News Editor
Analyzing and explaining international relations, historical issues, foreign policy, defense issues, military operations, strategic thinking, and also demography, ethnography, archaeology. Managed the safety of correspondents and freelances in the field, from Kosovo & Belgrade in 1998 to Afghanistan and Iraq. Produced interviews with newsmakers, opinion leaders and ordinary folks affected by the news across the world. From 2006 to 2013, I ran The World (who else can say that?)... as show producer (show-runner), about 30% of the time. Covering key stories, from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; the 2006 conflicts in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon; the assassination of Benazir Bhutto; the "Arab Spring." My best day's work came on June 5th 2003, when I reunited two paratroopers of the 101st Airborne, Jake McNiece and Ed Cone, who'd been separated on D-Day 1944.
Chief Sub-Editor/Senior Broadcast Journalist
Served in multiple roles, as a writer in the Newsroom; then primarily as a producer, director and editor on the flagship programmes Newsdesk, Newshour and Newsday; covering key stories including the First Gulf War; the coups in Russia; the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin; the Balkan Wars, the Chechen wars, among others. Served briefly as a reporter in Afghanistan (1991) during the final months of the Communist regime, locating and interviewing MIA Soviet PoW; famed guerrilla leader, Ahmed Shah Massoud; and reporting the first anti-government demonstration in Kabul. Also, conceived and created the post of in-house Africa/Middle-East reporter, pioneering the integration of news gathered by the language services with the mainstream English language output of the BBC World Service (1993). 1993 served briefly as a reporter in Malawi covering the transition to multi-party democracy, and the tragedy of the HIV/AIDs epidemic; and in Mozambique covering the return of refugees at the end of the civil war. 1996-97 served as Executive Editor of the special news bulletin for The World, (the Boston co-production).
Sub-Editor
Writing radio news stories, based on wirecopy and correspondent's despatches. Worked part time from July 1989, then full time from July 1990.
