Oversees APM Reports, a collection of investigative journalists and documentary producers, editors, researchers and digital producers dedicated to producing high quality reporting on issues that are often shrouded from public view. Also serves as the editor in chief of the Public Media Accountability Initiative, a collaborative of public radio stations across the country that pursue regional news investigations.APM Reports produces the award-winning investigative podcast In the Dark, which has been has been downloaded more than 70 million times. The second season of In The Dark was the first podcast ever to receive a George Polk Award, and won a 2020 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, 2020 American Bar Association Silver Gavel Award, 2020 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and 2019 Peabody Award. Season Two of In the Dark focused its investigation on the case of Curtis Flowers in Mississippi, a man who had been tried for the same crime six times and was on death row awaiting appeal. The podcast launched in May 2018 with 11 episodes released through July 2018. The podcast continued to track developments, including the Supreme Court’s announcement that it would hear Flowers’ case. Briefs submitted to the court cited ample reporting from the podcast, including APM Reports’ jury data analysis. Flowers’ conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in June 2019. Flowers was granted bail in December 2019, and in the fall of 2020, he became a free man when the State of Mississippi dropped all charges.

Managing Director/News – Oversaw all newsgathering and programming, directed a 90-person newsroom across platforms. Directed a news leadership team composed of the news director, program director and director of digital news. During tenure, MPR News won the 2015 Edward R. Murrow national award for overall excellence and newsroom staff won numerous national, regional and local journalism awards, including Columbia-DuPont, Edward R. Murrow, Online News Association, Society for News Design, Investigative Reporters and Editors, Emmy, Editor and Publisher and Society of Professional Journalists. Increased diversity of newsroom by hiring MPR’s first Black news executive, first female deputy news editor, first Hmong reporter and first Somali reporter and diversified content through a a podcast devoted to minority perspectives on the news, news beats on immigration and racial disparities and a youth radio project pairing a diverse young person with MPR News reporter to produce radio segments.

Supervised seven department heads and 150 journalists. Directed daily, enterprise and investigative reporting and prioritized major reporting efforts. Oversaw high-profile news stories and guided significant enterprise and investigative reports. Led efforts to steadily evolve newspaper’s website, re-allocating staff to increase breaking news and feature contributions.

Directed 28-person staff covering business and technology in the Twin Cities, which included 150 publicly traded companies and 18 among the Fortune 500. Recreated daily, Sunday and technology sections. Added weekly e-commerce report and international business coverage using Knight Ridder foreign bureaus. Created columns about the workplace, technology, investing, the economy and online shopping. Section awarded Best in Business in 1997, 1999 and 2000 by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and earned a special citation from the group in 2001 for a comprehensive report on unemployment in Minnesota.
