I used to follow code by stepping through a debugger. At Labs I learned to read code. I used to think that a good developer was one who could come up with the cleverest way to thread the next strand of spaghetti through their bloated code base. Now I believe that, through test-driven development and a dedication to refactoring, a responsible developer aims to keep a code base elegant and simple.The other thing that happened at Labs was that I started working with interpersonal dynamic. So many tech workers are drawn to the field for its seeming promise of a black-and-white world, and against this backdrop the true, non-dualistic nature of reality plays out. How do we see ourselves, and how do the attendant anxieties play out in the workplace, with our co-workers, with the way we position ourselves with respect to our social context... In my work I try to find ways to shift dynamic, so that our behavioral patterns might budge a little, enough that they might be recognized.
