About Chris Jackson

I am a Regional Manager at Lima Rural Development Foundation, where I lead a team of dedicated facilitators who are passionate about serving communities in the Limpopo Province. Our multifaceted approach to community development includes initiatives such as local livelihood support, agricultural assistance, community-driven conservation and restoration, nature-based solutions, and stakeholder convening. My passion for rural development and conservation stems from my nomadic childhood, which allowed me to explore the stunning rural landscapes and communities throughout Southern Africa. I pursued a degree in Environmental Science from Rhodes University, where I graduated with honours. I gained invaluable experience in community-driven restoration and nature-based solutions while working in the Umzimvubu Catchment, where I also serve as a chairperson of the Umzimvubu Catchment Partnership since 2022. As a result of our partnership, we have achieved remarkable progress in the preservation of the environment and the well-being of its people. My core competencies include the ability to facilitate community-driven solutions for rural development, a belief in establishing strong relationships with rural communities, and empowering them to take ownership of their projects. In addition, my unwavering commitment to safeguarding our natural environment fuels my drive to contribute to a better world for future generations.

Chairperson

Umzimvubu Catchment Partnership

Matatiele, Eastern Cape, South Africa

I am a proud member of the uMzimvubu Catchment Partnership (UCP), a society-driven collaborative effort of state, NGO, and private sector role-players dedicated to restoring and preserving the uMzimvubu catchment, a special place that faces multiple drivers of degradation and social injustice. As a UCP chairperson, I am responsible for leading and facilitating meetings, setting and implementing strategic directions, promoting the partnership, building relationships, ensuring accountability and compliance, managing conflicts, and motivating partnership members. My goal is to support the partnership's mission of restoring and maintaining the ecological infrastructure of the catchment through communal custodianship, and by piloting innovative Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) land care approaches. The UCP recognizes the catchment's potential to provide a wide range of ecosystem services to sustain the livelihoods of the surrounding and downstream communities. To achieve this, we convene catchment partners such as funders, strategic partners, research institutions, implementers, catchment stewards (communities, traditional leadership, CBOs), local government departments, and municipalities to work together towards this common vision. Our partnership's focus on restoration and maintenance of ecological infrastructure through communal custodianship is driven by the desire to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem's services for future generations.
