The opportunity to join SpringCM was very attractive to me because the problems were more infinite—in sharp contrast to the niche business of MSDSonline. Unlike the MSDSonline business model, where we held the documents and companies signed up for access to that information via a portal, SpringCM took the concept of an online document management solution to a new level. Now clients were interested in capabilities that would allow a free flow of document sharing & document distribution among any number of interested people. And SpringCM’s commitment in those early days was clear: “If it’s a business process and it involves a document, we’re going to solve that problem.”I was invited to join SpringCM at its inception to lead a team of specialists in architecting the foundation of this industry leading cloud content management platform. MSDSonline helps businesses, institutions, and government agencies manage Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) regulatory compliance requirements that include educating workers about the safe handling of chemicals. Through MSDSonline, Material Safety Data Sheets are inventoried and distributed on-demand as a system for cataloging information on chemicals, chemical compounds, and chemical mixtures. Safety data sheets may also include instructions for the safe use and potential hazards associated with a particular material or product.As the Co-Founder, first salesperson and the creator of the content-gathering strategy, I took over when it was little more than “a website with a bunch of users”. Confident that the site could be monetized, I designed the first MSDS document distribution product. I also successfully:• Built the largest collection of Material Safety Data Sheets on the Internet: nearly 5 million documents. • Developed partnerships with key chemical distributors and manufacturers to manage the MSDS updating process• Trained team of employees to facilitate use by to MSDSonline platform users

Sigma-Aldrich is a leading life sciences and research company that sells raw materials to pharma diagnostic companies as well as university labs.I’d just graduated from college as a bio-chemistry major when one of my professors recommended me for this opportunity. It was great cross-functional training since I worked on several teams, including:• Procurement—negotiating $10MM of raw material product acquisition annually. • New Product Availability—evaluating new products for the catalog• Supply Chain Management--effectively getting new chemicals through the QA process.At the time SAP was relatively new and Sigma-Aldrich was one of the early adopters. This enterprise-wide information system coordinated all the resources, information, and activities needed to complete business processes such as order fulfillment and billing. Since I was intimately involved with our business process— bringing in massive amounts of chemicals (thousands of transactions per day) for delivering and testing, interfacing with the chemists and moving the products into packaging — I was invited to be on the implementation team. This was the launch pad for a trend that’s consistently been part of my career: Managing and streamlining complex business processes.
