In 2015-2016, I will be looking for developers, software engineers, and analysts who are ready to dream, disrupt and deliver a better way for our customers, the financial industry and for each other. A standard year for me starts with planning targeted recruiting events on campus with the help of engaged alumni. I love to make trips to campus to meet with students at club events, career fairs, hackathons, and networking events. Check out the picture I attached from one of my favorite events last year: Bitcamp (Hackathon) at UMD.Once my resume drops close, things get even more exciting as our candidates start to sign up for their first round interviews on campus. I love to share tips to ensure that they feel prepared for their interactions with Capital One interviewers. While I wouldn’t consider myself a “career advisor” by any means, I tend spend a lot of time talking through options with my candidates who receive an offer to work at Capital One. I believe that it is important for students to know as much as they possibly can about their options while they are making one of the most important decisions of their lives: selecting the first chapter of their career journey. Because I often am the “face” of Capital One for my candidates, I do my best to show them our open and caring culture through our interactions in the recruiting process. Most of my days are spent interacting with candidates, recent hires, and alumni but I also spend a lot of time in excel and various recruiting systems. I’m a huge fan of analysis and often find myself thinking about ways to improve the recruiting process for candidates (and myself) on my morning runs. Recently, I’ve started to dabble in Tableau and am looking forward to learning more this year! Show less
Junior Recruiter
As a Junior Recruiter, I partnered with experienced Senior Recruiters to execute their recruiting strategy at each of their campuses. I also enjoyed preparing candidates for their interviews onsite at Capital One. One of my less exciting tasks included scheduling and facilitating large-scale interview days at various Capital One offices. While it wasn’t exactly my favorite activity, it was an awesome opportunity for me to meet with candidates (help them stay calm) and work alongside interviewers to provide a great candidate experience. In the 2013-2014 academic year, I had the privilege of managing the full life cycle of recruiting activities at the University of Maryland. As the lead recruiter at UMD, I learned first-hand how to manage my candidate pipeline and ensure that my candidates had a meaningful and engaged experience. This opportunity helped me identify new ways to source the best talent and improve our brand as an employer on campus. In the fall of 2014, I transitioned from a support role to an individual performer as I took on the responsibility of lead recruiter at Duke University in addition to the University of Maryland. As a Senior Recruiter’s “right hand woman,” I had the opportunity to learn about the recruiting process through their expertise. It was fascinating to watch how experienced recruiters approached their role in different ways. Through my experience working with a variety of recruiters, I learned to develop my own approach to the recruiting process. Show less
Senior Recruiting Coordinator - Campus Recruiting
As a coordinator on the campus recruiting team, I managed several projects and processes that helped support recruiters and the interview process. I had always been passionate about human resources (hence my major!) and I had the opportunity to learn first-hand how the recruiting processed worked for a large company like Capital One. It was bizarre to be on the other side of the process because I was just in our candidates’ shoes a year ago. I could completely relate to our candidates’ anxiety on interview days and did my best to make sure they felt as comfortable as possible on their big day.My job was to anticipate the needs of recruiters, candidates, and interviewers and start helping them before they knew they needed help. The more I learned about the recruiting process, the better I became at identify process bottlenecks and challenges before they were actual issues. I gained the trust of recruiters and interviewers and eventually was given the opportunity to manage larger-scale projects. Every day as a recruiting coordinator was different but I did a fair share of event planning, event logistic management, interview scheduling, interview facilitation, and process management. Assistant Store Manager
From as long as I can remember, I’ve loved fast-paced work that involves a lot of human interaction. Retail seemed to be a great fit for my work style and it also offered the very unique opportunity to manage direct reports straight out of college. I also loved the entrepreneurial feel of managing a store because you could see a direct correlation between the way a store was managed and its performance.I participated in Kohl’s “Manager-in-Training” Program that lasted for around 12 weeks then moved on to a role as an Assistant Store Manager. I lead a team of 15 direct reports to achieve sales goals and execute store operations in the Apparel and Accessory departments. I spent an average day running around a massive store and ensuring that all of its processes ran smoothly. During certain hours of the day, I acted as the lead manager of the store and solved problems on the spot. It was intense, exciting, and incredibly exhausting. My biggest claim to fame was the day I unloaded a massive truck during the holidays almost entirely on my own. It was incredibly invigorating to be inside of a truck throwing boxes down a conveyor belt. My favorite part of my job as an assistant manager was that I could directly impact store sales based on the way I designed the sales floor. I really enjoyed analyzing sales in each department and determining the under-performing areas. Once I knew our target area, I would rally my sales floor team to find creative (yet compliant) ways to impact the appearance of our sales floor and numbers.Because I was a recent hire, I also spent some time recruiting on campus for the program. The more I spent time recruiting, the more I realized I needed to make it my full-time job! Show less
