About Christine Shaw

My unique social impact model in real estate is part of the Blackshaw Real Estate Family in Canberra. My government background in social policy in overseas aid and refugee/humanitarian programs solidified my core way of life. Within my first 18 months as an agent, I established my Investors Can Help Project with the Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services, to help the region’s newest community members find housing. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is increasing, and the opportunity to be on the Deputy Chief Minister’s Consultative Group for Affordable Housing and Homelessness, and being part of the Housing Summit in October 2017, allowed me to actively be involved in policy development on housing. Government resources are finite, and none of us want to pay triple our taxes/rates to give government more money to fix issues. That’s where I believe those fortunate to be in the “haves” should give back. I had an idea of incorporating the ethos of social enterprises and community organisations and adapting these principles to a pre-existing sector - my sector of real estate. I am the only Agent with a Named Fund in perpetuity with Hands Across Canberra and give 10% of profits to help homelessness initiatives with my business ethos as "REAL ESTATE WITH A PURPOSE"™️, I also am the only agent in our region partnering with Soldier On Australia giving back with each of my Defence Housing Australia investment sales. With the help of Cindy Mitchell from The Mill House, my business was identified as a social impact model. My raison d’être is affordable housing – helping those facing homelessness. (Not housing affordability – see my first Blog for the difference.) The United Nations has decreed that having a roof over your head is a basic human right.Selling your home or investment property is an important journey, and owners can employ me to sell their home to have a positive social impact on the broader community.

Blackshaw Manuka / Christine Shaw Properties Dec 2018 - Present

My social impact model in real estate started in December 2018 when I launched “Real Estate With A Purpose” ™️ . I am the first Agent with a Named Fund in perpetuity with HAC - please go to the HAC website to learn how you too can make a difference. My unique business model means I have the opportunity to merge my love of real estate with my social policy background and help those less fortunate. The success of the model has benefited with greater strength and resources being applied through the Blackshaw property network, with Andrew and Belinda Chamberlain announcing our collaboration with my model from 2021. The journey continues with supportive clients, backed by Blackshaw Manuka - Canberra’s premier prestige real estate agency.
  • Deputy Chief Minister’S Consultative Group
Member, Consultative Group On Affordable Housing And Homelessness
Deputy Chief Minister’S Consultative Group Apr 2017 - Present
    Canberra, Australia
I was honoured to receive a call early in 2017 from Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry’s Office about consulting with the ACT Government on affordable housing and homelessness in the lead up to the October 2017 Housing Summit. It seems my Investors Can Help project plus my social policy background plus my real estate experience were coming in handy. I love wearing three hats! I get to sit at a table with great minds all wanting to contribute to a better holistic Housing Strategy, and am privileged to be part of it. The consultation process has been expansive, and we have a Deputy Chief Minister who knows the names of our homeless people and who really wants to make a difference.https://www.planning.act.gov.au/topics/affordable_housing
  • Marss - Migrant And Refugee Settlement Services
    Founder “Investors Can Help" Project
Marss - Migrant And Refugee Settlement Services Apr 2010 - Present
    Marss, Canberra
Here is my project that our magnificent Chris Peters helped me get off the ground. Dewani Bakkum and her team at MARSS are fielding enquiries from investors right now wanting to rent their properties to Canberra's newest community members. http://marss.org.au/index.php/investors-can-helpI would like to ask all of my network to tell people about this project. Property Managers are required by legislation to select the "best" tenant - which is determined by income, references and longevity of employment. By definition that means our newest community members will always be at the bottom of the list. HOWEVER, my project turns this around 180 degrees by getting the INVESTOR OWNERS to give their property manager instructions to rent to a refugee family. This way, the property managers can ignore their 1-20 ranked applicants and give the property to applicant no 21. If you know ANYONE who has an investment property, tell them about this. Rent is guaranteed through MARSS and the ACT Govt rental bond initiative covers the bond. Thanks for reading about my project - and thanks so much to Chris for "getting" me quickly and not thinking I was an agent trying to make money out of my idea.
  • Luton Properties
    Licensed Agent Act And Nsw
    Luton Properties Jul 2008 - Dec 2018
    Canberra
Starting in a family real estate business with only 37 agents and 5 offices was the best decision in 2008. Back then, no pressure to put my friends on the database; no forced selling for clients to book paper ads; no forced incentive scheme to refer to insurance/bank brokers. After a decade and the family business model changing to franchising, it was time to move on, but I’m proud to say I was the only agent to ever leave with future business locked in, guaranteed because of all the tenders I secured over the years.
  • Dept Of Immigration And Citizenship
    Assistant Director
Dept Of Immigration And Citizenship May 2000 - May 2008
I spent a wonderful 8 years at DIAC at the Executive Level working with like-minded, passionate community liaison souls who genuinely believed that at the minor level of government we could make a difference with community social cohesion efforts across Australia for all our inhabitants, from original indigenous custodians of the land through to the migration program that started in the 1600s. My colleagues were inspirational, in particular Les Hetherington, and we were always a little left of field in how the Dept looked at us .... until the London bombings (July 05), the Cronulla riots (Dec 05), Glasgow, Haneef, etc - and someone upstairs actually realised we could value-add. (Thanks Andrew.) As the French Minister for Social Cohesion (Jean-Louis Borloo) said after the Paris riots, concerning their social cohesion policies, ".. for 30 years we have not done enough". Pray to whomever your god is that somewhere in our political spectrum, we have a politician who sees the incredible opportunity to set a legacy and thinks beyond a three year term so we are not in the same situation in 10-20 years time.
  • Then And Now
Christine - A Writer? (Stop Laughing If You Worked With Me At Diac!)
Then And Now May 2000 - May 2008
    Multicultural Affairs Branch, Diac
My former Branch Head Dr Thu Nguyen-Hoan would probably roll around the floor laughing at the idea of me being a "writer" - as I could never get a Ministerial done without at least 4 attempts and lots of red pen. However, I found a niche in real estate winning many government tenders. I've also helped win various Award documents since 2008. In particular, my Green Policy contributed to a National REIA Innovation Award, the Telstra ACT Small Business Social Responsibility Award, and other REIACT Awards. It appears in real estate, actually understanding "their", "they're" and "there" are three separate words - and where to put apostrophes - is an in-demand skill set. Amazing how many government skill sets easily convert into real estate. Don't ever under-estimate how many skills you develop in government that the private sector appreciates. Never be scared to take the jump. The fact that I write my own advertisements and I’m known as a writer in this industry proves it.... (and no, I would never insult an owner asking them to pay for a copywriter to market their home!)
  • Spectrum M’Ment Agency/Aust Communications Authority (Now Acma)
Project Officer/ Assistant Director, Hr Development
    Spectrum M’Ment Agency/Aust Communications Authority (Now Acma) Jan 1996 - Apr 2000
    Canberra
I "jumped " to an APS6 HR position without any formal training because Chris Arndt and Jim Webster took a hunch on me and within 3 months was Acting Assistant Director of HR Development. We had the amazing Christine Goode as our boss, and I learnt so much during this time about people management and psychology. As a new EL1, I had the upheaval of the Howard Govt cuts with people crying on my shoulder, and also the merger of Austel and Spectrum Management Agency to work through. The best way of being thrown in the deep end and the very best of people to learn from.
  • Aciar, Part Of Dfat Overseas Aid Portfolio
    Project Coordinator
Aciar, Part Of Dfat Overseas Aid Portfolio Jan 1992 - Jan 1996
    Canberra
This was my first position in Federal Government and was incredible. The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR.gov.au) is the almost unknown gem I was privileged to work for. It only had 45 people - 17 of which were SES officers at the Senior/Principal Research scientist level. Flat structure indeed. The scientists pulled together tripartite projects with overseas governments, plus the Australian experts in the agricultural problem (Monash, QDPI, CSIRO etc) plus ACIAR as funding body. I was Dr Paul Ferrar's assistant, and he was responsible for biological control projects. We worked on stopping agricultural diseases coming to Australia by helping the developing country resolve their disease/pest problem. Dr Ferrar did all the development of ideas and the science and I did the admin - MOUs, contracts, budgets, reporting, travel, board reports, monitoring - which was indeed rare in the public service to work across so many areas. We worked World Bank times and I never knew about 4.51pm. Our brilliant world renowned scientists travelled over 150 days per year and often didn't claim full TA because they were so driven to help people overseas. 100% care bears. I worked on projects for fruit flies, nematode spray, biological control initiatives to stop pesticides, banana bunchy top virus, cassava cyanide, and other amazing projects. Social policy bug got me here. Australians should be so proud of this little slice of bureaucracy.
  • Conference Organiser
    Conference Event Manager
    Conference Organiser Oct 1987 - Dec 1991
    Brisbane And Canberra
After project management at BCC, I joined Ernst and Whinney Management Consultancy to organise 12 national conferences - they had bought out an insolvent company who had a great cash flow during Expo 1988. I lived on site for 5-7 days at a time at Hilton, Sheraton Mirage; Hyatt Sanctuary Cove and other 5 star hotels with a team of 5-10, to pull individual national events together over the 6 months of Expo 88. Loved the 100 hours per week, but exhausting. I then moved to Canberra April 1989 and worked at The Hyatt and then Conference Solutions.
  • The Hyatt Hotel Canberra
    Banquet Manager
The Hyatt Hotel Canberra Apr 1989 - Dec 1989
    Canberra, Australia
My first job in Canberra was at The Hyatt, only a year after it was restored and re-opened, highlighting the previous era of The Hotel Canberra circa 1924. Magnificent building, amazing standards. After years as a conference organiser, it was good to get behind the scenes of a 5 star hotel to learn all the workings. However, after being lambasted for wearing a $3000 Carla Zampatti trouser suit my mum gave me (mum was in the rag trade in Melbourne) and being sent home by the then Manager, Samir Harmouch, to put a dress on to show my legs, it became less appealing. He refused to allow women to wear trousers - yes, that was only 1989 !
  • Brisbane City Council
Secretary / Personal Clerk To Deputy Town Clerk
Brisbane City Council Oct 1978 - Oct 1987
    Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
With 120 wpm shorthand/ 140 wpm typing from Kangaroo Point TAFE, I was told Rod Metcalfe had 5 previous secretaries that didn't last any more than 6 weeks each, and was told there were bets that I wouldn't last 4 weeks. I lasted 9 years. He was the whizkid of the City Solicitor's Office at BCC and was given High Court cases and complicated staff situations to fix. I also typed up the younger brother's uni assignments every now and then. Rod ended up being Town Clerk and I followed him wherever he moved to within the org. I typed 8 page thick carbon paper High Court documents before liquid paper or electric typewriters; and had the chance to work in the Supreme Court transcribing. This is where I started having a para legal brain and he made me realise I wasn't a dummy. I worked on organising the 1982 Commonwealth Games; Brisbane's bid for the 1992 Olympic Games; and then in the early organising for Expo 88. So privileged to work on those 3 big Brisbane-changing projects over 9 years and have a mentor like Rod as well as Marc Bromet. PLUS the last 3 years I had the incredible Sallyanne Atkinson as Lord Mayor who told me not to worry when I had 32 males appeal against me in 1985 when I was the first BCC female to cross over from secretary to the then male-only clerical stream.
