Executive lead at Antefil Composite Tech, developing and scaling microengineered hybrid fibre technology for high-volume manufacturing of continuous glass-fibre reinforced plastics.I want to reform the composites manufacturing industry and support its transition to more cost-efficient processes and the use of sustainable technologies. I started my doctoral research at ETH with the intent to advance the availability of thermoplastic polymers as matrix materials for continuously fibre-reinforced structures. After defending my dissertation, my motivation to achieve this goal remains: thermoplastic composites can be recycled as a whole, therefore offering potential for circular value chains; and they can often be processed more efficiently than thermosets, which opens up applications in high-volume markets with a wider budget range. Historically, fibre-reinforced composites were developed as high-performance technologies for space, aviation, and high-end sports equipment. Many value chains therefore focus on the maximization of part performance, while the development of more efficient processing methods has only picked up support in recent years, mainly driven through lightweighting efforts in the automotive sector. Industry leaders agree that the future will see an increased use of thermoplastics over thermosets, but that technological advances in manufacturing methods are required to realize this transition. I have been lucky enough to conduct my research at ETH at exactly the right time to help make this transition a reality. The work of my project team and of the students I supervised has already provided the required science to address the associated challenges. Now, it is time to launch the commercialization of what we have achieved and bring our solutions to market.
