The Open Connect Control Plane is a team of twelve that develops the cloud-based Java server infrastructure that acts as the brain of the Netflix CDN and integrates it with other Netflix cloud services. We don’t deliver the bits; we command how the bits will be delivered: we decide what content is placed where, when, and how it gets there; then whenever someone presses play for a movie, what’s the best delivery node for that particular customer to stream that particular movie right now.Key responsibilities:* Directing the deployment and replication of content to all CDN nodes on the network while balancing maximizing cache offload, minimizing transfer costs, and minimizing deployment times.* Tracking the realtime status of all nodes within the CDN to quickly react the changes or failures of components.* Determining the best node(s) to serve a specific movie to a specific customer, taking into account the realtime status of the CDN as well as many facets of the requestor.* Maintaining all configuration and state of CDN components, including REST apis for querying or modifying.* Providing the operational UI console for insight and manual inspection/changes of configuration.* Performing operations, monitoring, and on-call support for these services.Some of the major technologies we’ve chosen to accomplish these tasks are: Java, Tomcat, Jersey, Amazon EC2, S3, Cassandra, Elastic Search, Zookeeper, memcached, Hive, Guice, Grails, Groovy, AngularJs.

I worked primary as a Java backend server engineer on high scale, high availability, customer facing services. Initially in a data center environment and then migrated to Amazon's cloud. Some key technologies were: Java, AWS, SQS, SQL, Cassandra, SimpleDB, memcached, REST, Tomcat, Jersey.* Key engineer innovating on the streaming server team, which develops the server-side infrastructure responsible for communicating with devices to coordinate playback. Focused on service availability, eliminating performance bottlenecks, and improving monitoring/insights to simplify production troubleshooting.* Lead architect and developer of a middle tier service responsible for tracking all current streaming activity, aggregating streaming playback session information, and managing users' viewing history.* Architect and engineer for the Streaming Infrastructure teams, providing consistency in technology across teams, design guidance and reviews, and lending a hand wherever it was needed most.
