Chris Barnes is currently Professor Emeritus in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria. From 2001-11, he was Director of NEPTUNE Canada, the large Canadian ocean megaproject that is transforming the ocean sciences. He helped secure over $140 million toward installation and operation of the world’s first regional cabled ocean observatory network. Previously, he was Director of both the Centre for Earth and Ocean Research and School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria, British Columbia. Geology degrees (Birmingham, Ottawa) and a PDF (Wales) preceded an academic appointment at University of Waterloo, Ontario in 1965, including Chair, Earth Sciences (1975-81). At Memorial University of Newfoundland (1981-87) he established and led the Centre of Earth Resources Research. From 1987-89, he was the Director General of the Sedimentary and Marine Branch, Geological Survey of Canada.Chris Barnes has served on many boards and councils, including as President of Geological Association of Canada, the Canadian Geoscience Council, and Academy of Science of Royal Society of Canada; also as Group Chair of both Earth Sciences and Interdisciplinary for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC); and as a commissioner of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and a member of the International Ocean Drilling Program and the International Commission on Stratigraphy. His research involves geology, micropaleontology, stratigraphy, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology and ocean observing systems. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications and 280 published conference abstracts.
