Principal Mechanical Designer

Current

Promontory, Utah

Principal Designer, Innovation Systems, Propulsion• Review and repair rocket system models and designs in preparation for production release• Create and manage PMI annotated models for high tolerance parts and complex assemblies. • Lead remote design reviews for major projects• Regular interface with Project Engineers and manufacturing technicians in constant effort to correct and refine product lines

Mar 2016 - Present

Sr. Mechanical Designer

Midvale, Ut

Equipment designer for mining process products, specializing in gold recovery equipment. Mercury retort systems, carbon regeneration kilns, electrowinning cells, carbon scrubbers. Emphasis on design improvement for increased reliability, manufacturability and overall cost reduction. Design upgrades were implemented and drawing packages improved. Entire product lines were migrated from legacy CAD systems to modern systems. This has been an interesting position, affording the opportunity to travel and help develop new fabrication shops, in an effort to eliminate the historically single-source fabricator issue this group has faced. I am currently planning to move on from this position, with a termination date of December 31, 2015.

Sep 2011 - Dec 2015

Senior Mechanical Designer

West Valley City, Ut

Lead mechanical designer for custom solution engineering firm. Projects were commonly adapted to existing infrastructure. Observation, survey and inspection work performed on-site in physically and atmospherically dangerous work environments. This was a short contract based job, but very unique and enjoyable as it afforded me the opportunity to interact closely with the client, and in challenging conditions.

Feb 2011 - Aug 2011

Mechanical Designer

Deltavalve

Mechanical designer for engineering company specializing in automated valve systems, targeting the oil refinery industry. These were very robust and moderately complex, self cleaning gate valves designed to perform in incredibly harsh environments, minimizing human interaction with dangerous processes. This position afforded me the opportunity to also work with the R&D group on prototype designs, as well as work in heavy manufacturing shops while building and testing prototype designs, as well as production projects. The opportunity to learn a great deal in the office while also getting my hands dirty, seeing the products come to life through my own efforts, was incredible. A very good position in my professional development.

May 2006 - Feb 2011

Mechanical Designer

Mechanical designer for a satellite communications company. I started out as a designer, with an engineer and two drafters in our group. After a force reduction I was asked to become the sole employee in the mechanical engineering department, as the other three employees were not retained. I accepted, and worked very hard to not only manage my duties, but continue to improve the mechanical aspects of the product line. There was a fair amount of project management involved, as I needed to handle all aspects of the department needs, including schedules and interactions with vendors, fabricators and testing agencies. This job was huge in my professional development, as it took me from my role of being focused purely on design, to a role where I was required to truly understand everything about an engineering department. I was able to make significant strides in the durability of our products, while reducing overall costs. This was certainly a milestone in my career.

Feb 2001 - Apr 2006

Mechanical Designer

Aetrium Inc.

Mechanical drafter / designer for a company designing and producing IC Test Handler equipment, for testing microchips. This was my first job in engineering, and it was the perfect job to learn in. We were designing complex automated machines, intended to allow customers to load stacks of trays full of untested IC chips into the machine, which would move these chips through a testing procedure and finally sort the chips based on the test results. As you can imagine, the degree of complexity was significant, and I learned a great deal about high tolerance machine part design, when to use platings and coatings, how to implement GD&T into the designs, and how to do this all effectively. I was surrounded by brilliant engineers, and had the benefit of an on-site machine shop. This afforded me the opportunity to not only learn and develop sound design principles, but also to check design ideas against practical machine shop capabilities. It was an incredible opportunity, and the ideal way to cut my teeth in mechanical engineering.
