You could say I'm institutionalised. I started coaching basketball whilst still a student at Macmillan Academy, then moved straight into a role as a Teaching Assistant and Electronics Technician at their Engineering department the autumn after I finished my studies. I volunteered at primary schools whilst doing my undergraduate degree, and immediately had a secondary school placement for my teaching degree. Since formally qualifying in 2011, I've worked in education in some fashion every year. Ive been a one man band running and marketing the History Departments at two colleges teaching A Levels and GCSE, whilst also dabbling in teaching English Language, Humanities, English Literature and transitioning to teaching Politics where I took my next career step being promoted to Subject Leader in Government and Politics. I've liased with, and worked for different exam boards and organised events with external organisations to enrich learners experience. As Tony Blair once said, "Education, Education, Education".Yes, you could say I'm institutionalised. Yet, education hasn't been my sole interest. I've worked on an Olympics project back in 2012. I've done security at a flea-market and drive in theatre in America. I've treaded the boards at the York Theatre Royal. My best review being the daughter of a fellow cast member asking why 'someone like him' was on the show (I was playing a shaven headed drug dealer.. too convincingly..?) I've wrote articles for a wrestling company and had a Seattle based publisher release my short stories. In recent years I have increasingly embraced online working and teaching, finding myself very comfortable with most digital tasks - quickly learning what I don't have experience in. As a subject or team leader I value clear communication and an attitude that prioritises solving problems rather than dwelling on their existence. I am very familiar with seeing a team get lost in the minutiae of problems, and I look to cut through that with a clear focus on institutional and personal goals and an appreciation of what we actually can do as individuals, rather than what we can't. My recent experience has revealed a hitherto unknown love for excel spreadsheets. I am seeing a doctor about it.Now I bring my creativity and my desire to educate and inform together through a small personal project www.pastexplorers.com. Forthcoming podcasts, videos and photography on historical topics in an accessible and engaging format. Join me, if for nothing else than a cautionary tale.See, I'm still educating. Definitely institutionalised.
