Data Warehouse Manager

Olympia, Wa

Technical manager of a cross-functional team of 14 engineers, data modelers, and business analysts, tasked with the ongoing development and maintenance of an Enterprise Data Warehouse for a 1400 employee health care administration agency.Fostered an Agile development environment, which supports a self-organizing, high-performance team. The delivery team develops their own stories to meet the requested features, and works collaboratively with the requestor to deliver the best solution.Set architectural principles for the development of a cloud-native, loosely coupled, enterprise data warehouse, and data lake. The team writes all infrastructure as code, deploys all changes as new resources - instead of patches - to take advantage of cloud computing, and makes all our data products tool agnostic.Established a monthly lecture for data analysts which presents the features, practical uses, and theory behind the data warehouse (e.g. star schema modeling, massively parallel processing, agnostic tooling, role-based access, etc.).Instituted an enterprise-wide cloud permissions management system, built on version control and continuous deployment. The resulting system allows developers to specify and test the exact privileges they need in code, while still requiring approval from security before those changes are moved into production. Security approval requires only the push of a button.Introduced open source, low-cost tools and utilities in favor of massive all-in-one tool suites. Migrated multiple teams from use of SAS to R; sunset use of SSIS in favor of python.Participated in the development of an agency-wide data strategy with our Chief Data Officer, and led a workgroup established to implement the strategy over 5 years.

Lead Enterprise Data Engineer

Olympia, Wa

Led a team of 7 engineers and data modelers in the implementation of a cloud native Enterprise Data Warehouse for a 1400 employee health care administration agency.Designed and implemented a rigorous version control and code promotion strategy using Git, to apply it to our data infrastructure (which is defined as code). Developed a suite of tools in Python to assist in the development and operation of the data pipeline, and trained the team to use and extend it. Developed an API-based “secret” checkout tool, to allow for authenticated, automated use of credentials, without adding those credentials in plain text into a script.
