At Carnegie Hall, my basic duties include various customer service tasks, such as helping people find their seats, pointing patrons in the right directions, and answering any questions they may have about the hall, show, etc. About 2 years in, I was promoted to Floor Captain. I am now required to organize and staff the floor I am working on, schedule breaks, listen to and address any issues the staff may have with the job/other staff members, and listen to patron issues and coordinate them with house management to reach a solution. And this year, I was put on a rotation to do Back Stage Attendant work. The primary task is making sure the artists are ready to go on stage when they need to be on stage, however last minute fires always need to be put out and the position can be very unpredictable. This job has given me firsthand experience in a professional theatre environment, as well as experience thinking on my feet in high pressure situations. For Crystal Field at Theater for the New City, I have been the Assistant Director for their Halloween Costume Ball in 2012, 2013 and 2015, their Summer Street Theater Tour 2013-2016, and their Love N’ Courage Benefit 2014 and 2017. I also filled in for her Assistant for several months whilst she was on Medical Leave. In that position I had to work with renters on filling out contracts, booking space, responding to e-mails/phone calls on Crystal’s behalf, interviewing prospective office volunteers, and other administrative tasks. I have also been brought in to do rehearsal piano for several productions over the years when my schedule would allow. Working with Theater for the New City has introduced me to the real workings of theatrical production including the pressure involved, the immense time commitment and the attention to detail it requires.
