Doing Data Collection on utility poles requires a strong knowledge of Utility equipment, good customer relations, and an ability to be self motivated. As a "pass 1 field technician," I would identify wire, equipment, insulator and all attacthment sizes found on Edison electrical poles. I also use a GPS to give a"calc point"(electrical pole) a lat/long coordinate location in the map. I've also worked as a "pass 2 field technician," taking measurements of the equipment, wires, and poles found on the map, using surveying equipment. All the attachments identified and measurements taken in pass 1 and 2 are entered into a customized ArcPad 10 software using a Fujitsu pen tablet out in the field. Then all finished and new work untis are uploaded/downloaded remotely using filezilla. In my final few months with UDC I worked as Hard to Access Technician, and a Quality Control Technician before the lay off.
