I am a geography major. Before I go any further, here's a shout-out to every other geography major who has had to answer questions like, “So, you study where places are on a map?” It’s amusing to reflect on how our discipline's holistic approach to issues was ahead of its time. Nowadays, jobs like ‘data/decision scientist’ seem to echo the multidisciplinary mindset we’ve always embraced.Throughout my career I’ve embraced this holistic approach, extending it beyond mere theoretical understanding. My journey has been about more than just comprehending processes; it’s been about rolling up my sleeves and diving into the practical implementation. I’ve learned to adapt, pivot, and acquire new skills as needed. Whether it meant learning a programming language, delving into data analysis, or collaborating across disciplines, I’ve been willing to do whatever it takes. This holistic mindset has allowed me to navigate complex challenges, connect dots others might miss, and contribute meaningfully to the organizations I have been a part of.On an individual level, this perspective has enabled me to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Whether discussing the musical heritage of “desert blues” with Berbers in the Sahara Desert, explaining app functionality to a remote development team devoid of cultural context, or commiserating with a colleague over coffee, acknowledging that every person is shaped by a multitude of influences fosters meaningful connections.
