As a Tax Professional at Jackson-Hewitt Tax Services, I helped hundreds of clients prepare their 2023 income tax returns through the use of electronic tax software, after receiving IRS-accredited tax training from mid-October to early December. I provided customers with quick and efficient service in preparing their tax returns, both current and previous years, as well as offering tax advice and recommendations to better assist them. I also performed other office duties such as scanning and making copies, answering and managing a multiline phone system, maintaining the office equipment and supplies, such as the printer, computer systems, and internet access, as well as decorating the office and kiosk’s professional appearance by updating the marketing posters, signs, flyers, and other ornamentation, as well as decorations put together myself. While working at Jackson-Hewitt, I received the Rocket Rookie award, celebrating my accomplishments as a first-time Tax Professional with the company.

As an Intern in the Summer session of the Organic Prayer Program, I joined the Sisters of St. Mary’s Convent in living in accordance with the ancient saying of "Ora et Labora" (Prayer and Work). Regarding the former, I assisted the Sisters in preparing for, leading, and participating in Morning Prayer 5 times a week, Evening Prayer 6 times a week, and Eucharist 3 times a week. My chapel duties included marking the Bible for Office readings, ringing the chapel bell on time, polishing all of the brass chapel instruments, setting the altar for worship, assisting the visiting priests in the Eucharist, marking the hymnal board with the appropriate psalms, hymns, and canticles, as well as other similar duties.For the latter, I assisted the convent gardener in sowing, weeding, maintaining, and harvesting the garden, including the lavender plants and fields. I collaborated with the other interns to produce creative solutions to agricultural issues, including designing and implementing a trellis system using recycled bamboo from the nearby forest. I also occasionally prepared meals for the sisters and assisted them in marketing and selling their goods from the gift shop, including an occasional trip to the local farmers market on Saturdays. I also, alongside the other two interns for the summer, studied the Rule of St. Benedict extensively, working to apply it to our current lives, as well as learning about ecological issues and sustainable agricultural practices, including visiting a local farm every Friday to learn how full-time farmers practice their craft.

As the Young Adult Intern and Youth Minister of St. John’s Episcopal, I worked with the rest of the staff members to help plan, organize, and execute liturgical services, administration tasks, and church-wide issues and projects. I was in charge of the Young Adult fellowship group and planned and organized monthly gatherings outside of church services. I also led the Youth Sunday school most weeks, creating presentations, activities, and lessons to help broaden the Youth’s knowledge and spirituality. I also organized monthly Youth events and helped to jumpstart the regional Youth group cohort of the Tri-cities area. I also served at the altar as a Lay Eucharistic Minister on a semi-weekly basis and provided a sermon on special occasions. I created, organized, and led a Library Guild to sort the Church’s library collection, and was a member of the Youth Committee, which planned and envisioned the structure of the Youth Group.

Interyear Fellowship is a gap year program located in Johnson City, TN. The program is for Young Adults who are looking to discern their next steps in life. The program has four strands from which it is structured: Service, Intentional Christian Community, Spiritual Formation, and Vocational Discernment. In service, I was tasked with working at a local ministry or non-profit in line with my interests to get direct experience and keep myself active during the year. The Intentional Christian Community was a small group of other “fellows” with whom I lived in a shared space, learning to work and live together while supporting each other in our journeys. With Spiritual Formation, I was taught and equipped with a series of healthy spiritual disciplines that helped further my commitment to God and prayer. Finally, during Vocational Discernment, I engaged in conversations around faith, service, and justice that helped grow me into the person God was calling me to be. I also would participate in other events that the organization would hold, such as volunteering opportunities, open houses, and table talk dinners, as well as help plan these events on occasion.

As a Resident Advisor, or RA for short, I was entrusted with both administrative and interactive responsibilities. For the former, I managed check-ins, check-outs, lockouts, and policy enforcement, as well as answered phone calls, resolved questions related to housing, gave tours, submitted maintenance requests, and kept confidentiality concerning FERPA. In the latter, I interacted with residents to help them succeed in their time at ETSU. I would encourage the residents to get involved on campus, check in with how they were doing throughout the semester, direct them to resources to help them succeed, and, at times, simply provide them with an ear to talk to when times were difficult.

As a server at Applebee’s, my primary concern was customer experience and service. I interacted with guests in a positive and friendly manner, while maintaining the dining ambiance with an enthusiastic attitude. I took food and drink orders, entered that information into a POS, and delivered the orders once they were prepared. I also offered my recommendations to the customers as required and stayed up to date on the latest menu information and shortages. I managed cash and card transactions as the customers paid for their food. I also oversaw ID requirements in accordance with Tennessee law when alcoholic orders were placed. I maintained sanitation requirements, including adapting to the updated regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
