Staff Materials Engineer
Building and managing a materials characterization lab to support the development and production of rocket propulsion systems. Approximately 75% of this role is dedicated to the production and development of solid rocket motors, including characterizing propellants and motor case materials. The remaining 25% focuses on supporting the production and development of liquid rocket engines.A significant part of my work involves conducting failure analysis and metallography, leveraging my expertise in scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as digital light microscopy and spectroscopy. I am currently setting up the lab infrastructure, establishing testing protocols, and ensuring the lab is equipped to analyze polymers, metals, and composites critical for propulsion applications. My goal is to create a streamlined lab operation that supports both production and long-term R&D initiatives. This includes creating standardized processes and eventually onboarding a technician to handle routine daily testing. My work combines technical expertise with problem-solving and collaboration to ensure materials and processes meet the demanding requirements of propulsion systems, driving innovation and reliability in aerospace applications.Currently, I am setting up the lab infrastructure, establishing testing protocols, and ensuring the lab is equipped to analyze polymers, metals, and composites critical for propulsion applications. Materials Engineer Ii
Member of the Woodward Corporate Materials & Surface Engineering team. Our group serves as a consulting group for the entire company. We take service requests related to material science, metrology, and tribology, among other things. Utilizing light microscopy, scanning white light interferometery, and scanning electron microscopy we are able to diagnose manufacturing issues and develop finishing and manufacturing techniques in order to design processes to create functional surfaces for a wide variety of applications.
Materials Engineer I
Performs routine analysis functions which require the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of engineering analysis tasks.
Biomaterials Research Fellow
Our mission statement is to "Conduct medical, craniofacial, and biomedical research, which focuses on ways to enhance the health, safety, performance, and operational readiness of Navy and Marine Corps personnel and addresses their emergent medical and oral/facial problems in routine and combat operations." I work in the Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine directorate, with people from both the Biomaterials and Environmental Surveillance department and the Maxillofacial Injury and Disease department, on separate projects.
Engineering Intern
Worked on multiple projects including a copper bio-leach, research into the structure of lignin in wood in relation to hydrolysis of wood fibers, and an algae biofuel plant. Ran hydrolysis of wood fibers. Ran a roto-vap to purify acetic acid out of a product solution recovered from a bioreactor system. Analyzed contents of hydrolysis product. Compared economic analyses of NREL hydrolysis research papers to Hazen analyses. Took samples of leach solution and performed copper content titrations, pH measurement and adjustment, addition of bacteria to leach solution, and flow rate adjustments. Worked in sample preparation. Sized and calibrated process pumps. All projects progressed from small to pilot plant scale in an industrial environment.
