About Christopher Cueto

Current fifth year graduate student working on polymer and nanomaterials synthesis in the group of Todd Emrick at UMass Amherst (Polymer Science & Engineering Department). My thesis research focuses on the synthesis & design of polymer and functional organic molecules as ligands for inorganic nanoparticles, primarily lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3). By replacing conventional, off the shelf ligands with more sophisticated organic structures we can alter nanoparticle properties in useful ways, such as enhancing their dispersion in a nanocomposite host (i.e. thin films), improving stability against air and polar solvents, using polymer to control ion exchange reactions at the nanoparticle surface (and thereby control perovskite composition and color) or using pi-conjugated structures to displace traditional aliphatic (insulating) ligands for device applications. By using tools of molecular design and synthesis we seek to address the key shortcoming of perovskite nanomaterials, namely their poor stability, by focusing on the organic/inorganic interface at their surface, with important implications for the eventual use of this class of semiconducting nanomaterials in display technology, catalysis and other applications.

Graduate Student Researcher

Current

Amherst, Massachusetts, United States

Thesis research on hybrid nanomaterials combining polymers/conjugated small molecules and inorganic nanoparticles.- Developed and synthesized novel small-molecule and polymer-based ligands (e.g. cations, zwitterions) for integrations with all-inorganic CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br or I) perovskite nanocrystals to augment their synthesis, color-tunability, and optoelectronic properties.- Prepared a series of zwitterionic block copolymers with enhanced solubility in media used to handle CsPbBr3 NCs (e.g. toluene, mesitylene). This resulted in NCs with enhanced film-forming properties, stability in polar solvent, and in some cases unusual morphology.- Utilized polymer halide salts to control tuning and halide exchange reactions of CsPbX3 NCs. Research performed in collaboration with Mitsubishi Chemical, resulting in publication of manuscript and filing of a provisional patent.Skills and techniques: Small molecule monomer and ligand synthesis, controlled radical polymerization (REFT, ATRP), emulsion polymerization, conjugated polymer synthesis, hot-injection nanoparticle synthesis (CsPbBr3, Fe3O4), sol-gel methods for nanoparticle synthesis (SiO2). GPC/SEC, FT-IR, NMR, UV-vis, Photoluminescence Spectroscopy, ESI-MS, MALDI-TOF, TEM, AFM, Laser-scanning Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy, TGA, DSC, DLS, WAXS/SAXS, powder XRD, thermal evaporator.
