Profile bio

About Christopher Fee

My core strengths and passions lie with faculty development, an expansive view of creative and effective pedagogy, and a commitment both to the ideals and the practical applications of the traditional liberal arts.I’ve long been engaged and passionate in the recruitment, development, and empowerment of young faculty, most obviously in my role as the Johnson Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities at Gettysburg College, but also notably in my roles as Chair of English and the Chair of the Faculty Personnel Committee. My commitment to creative pedagogy is likewise quantifiable, and has been lauded nationally in publications as significant and diverse as “The 300 Best Professors” of the Princeton Review in 2012 to “How Humans Learn: The Science and Stories behind Effective College Teaching” in 2018. Most importantly, as an administrator and a campus leader, I have made it a point of pride to give my colleagues the resources and support they need to excel.I have made a career of making the arcane accessible, helping students to discover for themselves its relevance to their own lives; my works of public scholarship are concerned with how big ideas matter in everyday affairs. This is the approach I take to the liberal arts in general, the core ideals of which are extremely valuable to us all, both on their own merits and also in the ways that they help us to understand and to improve the world around us. As a leader in higher education, I must make this case eloquently and emphatically, not just to lawmakers and trustees, but to students and teachers, as well.I have ample practical experience with large budgets operating under considerable constraints, with labor and student issues on the macro-level, and dealing with the practical concerns of everything from the day-to-day classroom concerns to major pivots due to crises.I have served for over a dozen years as an elected school board director in the public schools of Pennsylvania, overseeing an annual budget in excess of $28 million, as well as bond issues and major construction projects, contract negotiations with union, administrative, and outside entities, in addition to legal issues and outcomes-assessment.I have practical experience in just about every area of Faculty Governance at Gettysburg College, having sat upon and often chaired most major committees, from personnel to curriculum, from benefits to bias response.I work collaboratively: I have developed, cultivated, and nurtured respectful relationships with every major office at Gettysburg College. I am a proven consensus-builder.

Listed skills include Leadership, Teaching, Faculty Development, Creative Pedagogy, and 2 others.
