In many of my roles during my broadcast career, I was selected to train new staff because I was very thorough in my training style. While training one particular new operator, and giving her options on how to perform certain tasks, she said to me, "Show me how you do it," because she told me I was good at my job, so she wanted to do it my way. As I was transitioning out of another broadcasting role years later, I was training my replacement and my manager told her, "Learn everything you can, because I want you to be just like him." During my time in financial services, one of my managers, after observing me working with a client, said," I don't know how you do what you do, but I'm glad you do it." More than a decade ago, I joined Toastmasters because I wanted to get better at public speaking. What I also got out of my four years in Toastmasters that I didn't expect, was the ability to think on my feet, and opportunities to lead as part of the club executive. Oh yes, and those public speaking skills, well, I've used those a lot over the past 15 years, speaking to a variety of groups, both internal and external. People have told me I'm funny, engaging, and inspiring. In reality though, I'm just up there having fun and if the audience gets more than that from the information I share and the stories I tell, then I believe it's been a good day for them and for me. Over much of the past five years, I've spent a lot of time on personal leadership and growth. I'm human. I make mistakes, which I often reflect on, learn from, and hopefully do better next time. I listen to podcasts on leadership, and my book collection is filled with titles that teach me new things. Speaking of books, I've written and self-published two of them, One of which has made its way into the hands of readers in six countries.If you've read my bio to this point, thank you, and if you're thinking I am all work and no play, I'm going to pop that balloon because I also live by the motto, "I'm on this planet for fun," and I look for ways to have fun in everything I do.
