Conceived and published by a collective of Evergreen State College students and largely produced by local musicians, artists, photographers and writers throughout the 5 year run. Glossy center bound format. The Rocket (Seattle indie music rag) dubbed us the "coolest new music and arts magazine" in 1998. My content largely focused on local music and musicians but in March of 1998, I traveled to Chiapas, Mexico under an individual learning journalism contract through the Evergreen State College and spent two months chronicling the conflict between the indigenous Mayan refugee camps, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and the Mexican Army. On April 10th, our group from Pastors for Peace was attacked by paramilitaries of the Paz E Justicia in the village of Diez De Abril. We had been warned that paramilitaries had taken over the village and that the men had been chased out of the village and were living in the surrounding hills. The women and children were under house arrest and there were reports of physical abuse and rape. Our group was immediately handed a written statement by what we thought were paramilitaries stating "Foreigners not welcome. Leave now or we'll burn your vehicle". I assumed that meant with us on it so, we made plans to leave after a prayer circle. Our vehicle was surrounded by men with batons and machetes. We pushed through and as we were crossing the creek outside the village, I heard gunfire and a bullet struck our bus. We were met by journalists from 'La Jornada' and other media at our hotel in San Cristobal that evening. It was reported in the New York Times the next day. Show less
