About Christopher J Smith
I've always been fascinated with aviation and aerospace technology which led me to study for my masters in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Manchester. After graduating, I enrolled on a PhD revolving around the use of metal additive manufacturing and topology optimisation for producing minimal structures, particularly relevant for aerospace. It was during this time that I fully appreciated that the design freedoms and greater choice of materials offered by additive manufacturing, was not only potentially game-changing for aerospace, but a whole host of industries. And one technology in particular, electron beam powder bed fusion (E-PBF), really stood out as having huge untapped potential. After my PhD I carried on my research as a Research Associate, now focusing a lot more on trying to unlock the potential of E-PBF. During this time I was approached by Reliance Precision Engineering who had, in conjunction with the University of Huddersfield, developed a novel charge neutralisation technology that addresses one of the key limitations of E-PBF. They recruited me to help develop a prototype E-PBF machine around this technology. A few years later, and with VC funding, we spun out into Wayland Additive Ltd, now with the task of developing a commercial platform. Two years after that we launched Calibur3, our first commercial E-PBF platform, which has now been shipped to customers.
Listed skills include Finite Element Analysis, Additive Manufacturing, Matlab, Research, and 10 others.

Head Of Engineering Department
CurrentHeading up the engineering department at Wayland Additive, which is responsible for developing our Calibur platform and comprises the applications, software, electronics, mechanical and electrical engineering teams.
Head Of Applications
Heading up the Applications team who cover:• Developing the melt process for Calibur3 (melt strategies and parameters)• Developing new materials (e.g. Vibenite290, CM247, Shape memory Ti alloys, Tungsten)• Developing the three in-process monitoring systems on Calibur3 (IR, Structure Light imaging & electron imaging)• Writing of machine scripts intrinsic to the operation of Calibur3• Supporting customers with technical issues and new applications• Creating and running customer training programs• Improving the performance, reliability and usability of the Calibur3 platform
Additive Manufacturing R&D Engineer
Developing our prototype machine into a commercial platform that would become Calibur3
Additive Manufacturing R&D Engineer
Taken on to develop a prototype E-PBF machine which incorporated a novel active charge neutralisation system. This machine would form the basis for founding Wayland Additive, where the technology would be developed into a commercial platform
Postdoctoral Research Associate
• Instigated a program for developing in-processing monitoring techniques for EBM and SLM processes• Developing new materials for both EBM and SLM processes • Application of novel topology optimisation method to real world aerospace cases as part of the ATI Horizon program with GKN, Autodesk and Renishaw• Optimising EBM process parameters to produce complex geometries with minimal support structures and defects.• Managing InnovateUK and other funded projects• Teaching and supervision of undergraduate, MSc and PhD students • Consultant to industrial partners on the use of metal additive manufacturing
Phd Researcher
• My PhD revolved around the use of a novel topology optimsation method for producing minimal mass structures using additive manufacturing. • Test samples were produced using electron beam additive manufacturing and load tested to validate the method. • My PhD yielded three publications
Invited Researcher
A one month collaborative project between the University of Sheffield and CSIRO to develop process parameters that reduce and even eliminate the need for support structures in EBM additive manufacturing.
Engineering Intern
I was taken on for three summer placements (2006, 2007 and 2008) at RWE nPower's coal fired powerstation in Tilbury.
