About Christopher Kruse, Phd

Christopher Kruse, Phd is a Atmospheric Scientist at NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research. He possess expertise in linux, wrf experience, parallel programming, c, programming and 10 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "The SIParCS internship is a pretty selective program and being accepted is already a sign of being very good. A few interns in this crowd are the best ones and are able to submit a paper during the short 11 weeks of the program. Chris submitted not one but two papers ("Evaluation of WRF scaling to several thousand cores on the Yellowstone Supercomputer" at FRCRC, see publications below, and another one for AMS 2014), and so far I believe he is the only intern having done so since the program has been established. He has also found the time to help me with the documentation for the supercomputer users running WRF and a plethora of other things not directly related with his internship. Chris is truly both a great meteorologist and great software engineer. Finding an individual that is great at one is hard enough, finding one that is great at both is close to impossible. He knows WRF very well, better than many other scientists I've worked with. He is extremely organized and has great attention to the details (this can make or break a project, when there are hundreds if not thousands of parameters to tweak for the study at hand). My mentoring style includes to overwhelm the student with work to do and see how do they cope -- nice life experience, isn't it? Who doesn't get too much more work on the job, sooner or later? Chris put me in troubles, since he did everything I asked him to do! And note that I ask hard problems not simply lots of things that a student can cope with working overtime. In fact working hard would not have helped -- working smart did. The papers he submitted in this short time and the appointment at Yale speak for themselves. It has been a honor working with Chris."

Listed skills include Linux, Wrf Experience, Parallel Programming, C, and 11 others.

Christopher Kruse, Phd work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Research Scientist

Boulder, Colorado, United States

Working on atmospheric gravity wave research into their physics, quantification, and parameterization using numerical models, linear models, simple theory, aircraft and satellite data, and now machine learning.

Jul 2021 - Jan 2023

Advanced Study Program Postdoctoral Fellow

Boulder, Colorado

I am working in the Climate and Global Dynamics laboratory to develop a new mountain wave drag parameterization. Broadly, I have interests in both mesoscale and global dynamics and am working toward a career of understanding how mesoscale phenomena actually work and incorporating this knowledge into general circulation models. I am also interested in.

Sep 2018 - Apr 2020

Graduate Student

New Haven, CT

Working with Professor Ronald Smith in the Geology and Geophysics department at Yale University. I participated in the DEEP propagating gravity WAVE experiment over New Zealand (DEEPWAVE-NZ) field project over the 2014 austral winter. My current research is focused on the 3-D propagation and attenuation of gravity waves generated in the New Zealand region..

Aug 2013 - Aug 2018

Summer Internships In Parallel Computational Science

Mesa Laboratory, NCAR

Worked with Davide Del Vento to test and document scaling of the Weather Research and Forecasting model on the new petascale Yellowstone supercomputer at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center. I scaled a large workload simulating Hurricane Katrina at 1-km resolution from 512 up to 64K cores. Effects of varied domain decomposition aspect ratios on model.

May 2013 - Aug 2013

Graduate Research Assistant - Atmospheric Sciences

Laramie, WY

Graduated with a MS in Atmospheric Science from the University of Wyoming in May of 2013, with a GPA of 4.0/4.0. Studied dynamics of the marine atmospheric boundary layer off the coast of southern California. I participated in a field project using the University of Wyoming King Air NSF facility as part of the PREcision Atmospheric Marine Boundary Layer.

Aug 2011 - May 2013

Summer Internships In Parallel Computational Science

Boulder, CO

I worked in the Computational Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) at NCAR as a summer Siparcs intern. My project was to see if/how much the NCAR Command Language (NCL) could benefit from from parallelization on a graphics processing unit. Simple operators, matrix multiplication, averaging functions, and a polygon function were parallelized on a GPU..

May 2011 - Aug 2011

Student Researcher

Grand Forks, North

Work for the Atmospheric Science Department at UND. Perform quality assurance and data from research projects from Saudi Arabia, Mali, and North Dakota. I am currently working on a poster for the fall AGU meeting.Program using IDL, C, and Python programming languages. I also use bash, csh, and perl scripting languages. I am a developer in sourceforge.net.
