The new building’s exoskeleton steel structure is designed to minimise the structural impact on the Brisbane’s Clem Jones Tunnel that lies directly beneath the site. The cantilever provides a canopy to a public plaza that links the hotel with the tower’s recessed lower levels. The cantilever is 7.5 metres above the hotel, such that its soffit is seen as a key element defining the intervening public realm. Its geometry gathers the forces of the exoskeleton above and ties the structure to the core. At the top, the diagrid forms a horizontal trellis over a roof garden. Show less

The project relocates the building’s foyer onto Post Office Square where space lacking previously was found, enabling new retail outlets to be inserted along Queen Street.A reconstruction of podium roof plant allowed the creation of a new fourth level above the existing three levels. This level now comprises two glass pavilions of office space opening out to a garden terrace overlooking the square. The horizontal spandrels of the former podium façade have been removed and replaced by floor-ceiling glass. The tilted geometry of the new glazing system and new awning is derived from the angular forms found in Leonard Shillam’s sculptures. Blight Rayner was responsible for both the external refurbishment and the foyer and retail tenancy fitouts at ground level. The podium office spaces are now occupied by WeWork. Show less

The design solution through this site will provide a much needed link between the city and Brisbane River.Chris was part of the design team that documented and delivered the project throughout site phase until practical completion in 2016. Over the years Chris' role grew organically during the course of the project. He initially joined the team to support in documentation and delivery but soon found himself directly navigating and liaising with external clients/design managers whilst supporting the wider team members. Seeing the initial vision come to life each week on site was extremely rewarding. The foyer spaces and the interconnecting stairs between tenancy floors are some of the most favorable design outcomes Chris successfully delivered with Woods Bagot. The new commercial office tower which accommodates the Queensland Public Service, provides a symbol of Queensland’s strong sense of purpose, identity and confidence in its future.Providing a unique destination, the site is ordered into eight ‘platforms’ of public engagement. Each platform has a unique design quality: an urban retail laneway, intimate sub-tropical botanical spaces, a formalised entry space off William Street. Show less
