Innovation is most likely to occur at the intersection of disciplines. My career has been dedicated to scientific discovery at the fringes. I have used an animal model of cardiac defects to shed light the biologic origins of hematopoietic stem cells. I biked through Amish country to meet with elders and spread vaccine awareness and access. I use enzymes from the world of plant pathogenesis to gene edit human marrow to help cure sickle cell disease and thalassemia. A common theme of my professional career is the merger of biologic and computer technologies to improve lives.
