I oversee several teams that form part of our platform engineering group, managing both managers and individual contributors. Working with engineering leadership and product management, I have steered struggling teams back towards effectiveness, adjusting processes, expectations, and personnel as necessary to ensure success. I was a key part of a massive hiring effort that built out PagerDuty's new Lisbon-based engineering team: I created the interview process, supported interviewers and hiring managers, and onboarded the new team members, including new managers, enabling these teams to become self-sufficient within six months of when their first members joined.

I lead a variety of teams as the company grew and scaled: initially focused on infrastructure teams, providing base services for the product engineers to build PagerDuty on top of, I later moved to the other end of the spectrum and managed several products engineering team responsible for several pieces of core PagerDuty functionality, including schedule management, stakeholder updates, and user authentication.

I lead a team of eight software and dev-ops engineers in building, maintaining, and scaling the backend services and infrastructure for 500px, serving over 80 million photos to over 7 million users. I worked closely with the leads of our Community, Marketplace, and Content teams to coordinate projects that impact or span multiple engineering teams, and to ensure all work meets our high quality, performance, and resiliency standards. I was responsible for an annual infrastructure budget of over $1.4 million, and managed and negotiated relationships with our vendors to improve service levels and keep costs controlled.

I directed the move to a service-oriented architecture without disruption to the existing customer base or the company’s sales pipeline, including complete rewrites of services such as authentication, user registration, and customer administration. I integrated new (Rails/MySQL) web applications into an existing legacy (C#/SQL Server) system, while allowing both the old and new systems to run in parallel during the transition. I also improved engineering processes by introducing Agile concepts and guided the development team into learning and adapting to Agile methods, including holding several seminars on new technologies, working closely with other developers, and providing background support to the SCRUM master. I also defined coding and development standards and brought legacy codebases up to those standards, set up automated builds and testing, and managed the release process for all projects.

I brought engineering best-practices to the company, introducing formal source control (Git) and issue tracking systems (JIRA), and restructuring the team around a modern, Agile-based development model. I lead the design and architecture for the next-generation software implementation based on the existing prototype’s feature set, and lead our small team in building a new, distributed, and service-based customer relationship management portal in Ruby on Rails that integrated with the new, cloud-based CMMS product written in Java. I researched, tested, and selected the technologies to be used to build each part of the service, including what frameworks the software will be built on (such as Play! Framework, jQuery, KnockoutJS, and MySQL).

As Technical Lead, I co-invented a new (patent pending) technology to inject advertisements into 32-bit Windows applications without requiring source code. I then managed a team of two developers working on the core Ad Enablement product that used this technology, and created a toolset to allow college interns to place advertisements in hundreds of downloadable casual games at low cost, generally in under an hour per game.I later designed and implemented most of the major front- and back-end services for the company’s social games, which were enjoyed by over one million users. I planned and managed the migration of all ad network traffic from one ad management system to another with no downtime. This service was used by 38 million unique users and was integral to the company’s business.

I designed and implemented major portions of the Services and Messaging Infrastructure , including work on the peer-to-peer subsystem. I took over development on the bi-directional HTTP transport layer, extending it to enhance robustness and reliability over high-latency and unreliable networks, and to better withstand attacks by malicious users (or malfunctioning clients). I also improved concurrency and scalability of the server cluster by rewriting several core operations to be asynchronous and parallelized, and rewrote both server and client products to further increase the scalability of the server cluster, by moving large portions of the server’s logic out onto the clients.
