About Christopher Nazzaro
Grammar and I have always been close. I began studying Latin, the language once eponymous with grammar, in middle school; I continued through college, and I have taught Latin as a private tutor for many years. At the University of Chicago, as a student of English literature, my coursework focused on critical reading and writing expertise. I participated in a number of seminars devoted to the close reading and interpretation of texts, ranging from Old English to contemporary media studies, and I took part in an intensive writing workshop devoted to clarity and concision across multiple genres. I spent an academic quarter abroad in Rome. And after traveling to China and Japan, I began studying Japanese at the Tenri Cultural Institute, the Japan Society, and as an auditor at NYU. I came to TESOL through my study of Italian and Japanese. While studying Japanese, I came to meet several Japanese immigrants, tourists, and expatriates, with whom I formed a weekly language exchange group. We collectively studied both Japanese and English grammar, and my knack for explaining English in this setting led me to TESOL as a profession. I then spent months as a volunteer at the International Institute of Buffalo, where I worked with newly arrived refugees from diverse countries. Knowing any of their languages would have been a challenge; knowing all of them was near impossible. For a newly aspiring ESL teacher, however, the language barrier was an advantage, because it enabled me to practice teaching basic English communication skills. With Nepali, Bhutanese, Eritrean, Burmese, Iraqi, and Iranian refugees, I navigated supermarkets, doctors’ offices, hospitals, food stamp lines, and Social Security offices, seeing each quotidian place through the eyes of people totally alien to America and its ways. Some of this I could explain. To fill the rest of the time, I elicited impromptu lessons in Nepali or Farsi, Turkish or Arabic, more wonderful language exchange.
Listed skills include Teaching, Social Media, Esl, Public Speaking, and 2 others.

Manager
I began as an intern in January of 2007, became a Box Office attendant in April 2007, and then a manager in 2012.
Shop Manager
I have also worked at a small boutique in Soho called Kiosk, where I categorized and filed invoices, packing slips, and all other paperwork. I very often ran the store solo, when the owner was out of town, handling all customers, inventory, and maintenance duties. Kiosk is not just a store; it is an artistic venture, and I assisted with many aspects of the display of the objects and both the art of selling them literally, and the art of selling objects through story and metaphor. I have edited the Kiosk newspaper and co-written some of the website text.

Teaching Assistant Intern
It was at the American Language Institute where I benefitted from the most concrete observations and experiences of teaching when I served as Maxine's teaching intern in the spring of 2011. I attended every class of her Intensive Course in American English (X30.900) on American culture. I observed the class at first, but in little time Maxine was so kind and generous a mentor as to allow me to co-teach or assist her in most classes. Her example and direction have shaped and guided my still new career.Maxine's American culture class was inspiring for its expert and frequent contextualization. Role play and realia were employed regularly, bringing students closer to the topics at hand. Often times we made site visits, class trips that expertly contextualized the content. Rather than have students merely practice ordering in a restaurant, Maxine held a class in a diner (naturally after ample classroom practice). When preparing the students for a mock trial (a clever way of teaching tag questions), Maxine arranged a tour of the city supreme courthouse and showed clips from "Twelve Angry Men." When I took my first teaching job at a corporate ESL school, I immediately emulated this, taking students to a yoga class to teach commands, and reinforce body-part vocabulary. After a trip to the high line, a stationery store, and a cafe, my students were much more eager to study the dry, corporate lessons my school had plotted out.
