Industrial Designer
CurrentChris began his career in design as a Historical Tinsmith specializing in historic reproductions, restorations, and custom design and fabrication. He holds a BA from the University of Lethbridge where he studied fine art and philosophy. During his undergraduate degree he focused on sculpture and printmaking, drawing major influence from the Constructivist movement. His final projects attempted to express the concepts of existentialism through the sculpted form...Chris received a Masters of Environmental Design in Industrial Design from the University of Calgary's Faculty of Environmental Design. His research and design work involves approaching technology and design from a philosophical background. By understanding the essence of technology we can adjust our design approach and practices to create more appropriate and sustainable solutions. Realizations in his research have brought Chris into the field of way-finding design. Technology is a form of existential way-finding, and traditional wayfinding concepts can be viewed through the lens of technology studies. As human beings we make our way through the world and understand it by virtue of the objects we design.Chris has worked on several projects in the Calgary area including: the design of the signage and way-finding program for Sunterra Market's flagship location, the design of the signage and way-finding program for the new Calgary Board of Education building, and the RiverWalk Phase 1 project currently under way in the East Village with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.
