Thought to live by: There are a few key components to being a successful part of leadership within any company. Onboarding process, professional/career development, and departure strategies We as management have to make a shift from the thought process of "...everyone is replaceable". As we look at how to cut overhead and find savings, the missing piece is, turnover. How we welcome our staff into our company is just as critical to that employee as it the conditions in which they work from day to day. Spending at least 1/4 of each work day developing the staff that work for you pays off, both in the short term and the long term. Developing your staff; will show them they are valued, give them a direct line to their management, and will empower them become more of an asset to you personally. This, in turn, means they become an even bigger asset to the company. Spending this time with them in the front end means you spend less time doing corrective action on the back end. The defining piece to this is: How involved with the departure of your team members are you? Are you finding it a surprise when employees are leaving? I am a firm believer in people don't leave companies they leave managers. How an employee departs a company is a direct reflection on their immediate supervisor. If you have managed your onboarding process correctly, and been an active part of their career development. You will find the departure of an employee will be less of a surprise, you will lose them to other departments and internally. In the cases where they are leaving the company, you will be better prepared and much more involved in how an employee leaves as well.
